Merger: Mayhem or Good Management?

When news of the Delta-Northwest merger hit the streets, an overwhelming majority (54 per cent) of passengers expected the merger to result in a deterioration in service. Past history is on their side, at least in the short-term. Previous airline mergers have resulted in mayhem. Pilots find that the control panels are different on the new planes;  baggage losses mount; merged reservation systems collapse; employees strike over reduced

pensions or the degrading of seniority positions. All of these are in the new Delta's future (the Northwest brand is to disappear), including a strike by Northwest's pilots.

So why merge? Predictably, it all comes down to the bottom line. The new Delta expects to be able to wring better terms from some of its suppliers, to save up to $A645 million by using the combined fleets. Delta also expect to gain millions in additional revenue from passengers, especially big corporate accounts, attracted by improved connections and reduced travel times.

In the end it is difficult to predict whether the new Delta will rise or fall until the deal is done and the new fares are set.
