The New Face of Qantas in 2008

As the New Year festivities slowly crawl to an end, new Qantas chairman Leigh Clifford must decide the path of Qantas in 2008. Clifford and his 11 member board face a string of problems to kick off the New Year, including increasing industrial unrest and the continued sky-rocketing fuel prices.

In the months ahead, Qantas directors also have to resolve a number of key issues affecting the future of Australia's national carrier. Three of the biggest include: finding a successor

to reigning chief executive Geoff Dixon, choosing a replacement for the ageing 747, and introducing a frequent flyer program that customers will accept.

Clifford will need to be able to negotiate with unions, if Qantas management decides to get its new fleet of Boeing 787 and Airbus A380 jets serviced offshore.

The proposed replacement of Qantas planes will be equally complex because all that now exists of a replacement aircraft is a computer screen concept, a mock-up cabin and a pile of design drawings.

Other issues high on the board's agenda will be whether to spin off the freight business and restructure the frequent flyer program. Sources suggest that it will be at least a year before changes are made to the frequent flyer program. The product is to be restructured to make seats available at all times on all flights; the difference being that you will have to pay with more points to get a frequent flyer seat during peak periods.

And so we await with bated breath for Leigh Clifford to reveal his plans for Qantas in 2008.
