Recently released figures released show 204,000 bags are either lost or stolen each year in the air transport industry. Reports show that lost or mishandled luggage costs the airline industry more than $3.8 billion annually. The Association of European Airlines says British Airways is the worst offender for missing baggage, closely followed by Air Portugal and KLM, according to a quarterly report.
The good news is that the majority of lost bags are eventually returned to their owner, usually within two days, but about 204,000 bags still remain lost or stolen each year. In Australia, insurance companies processed 16,000 claims for lost, stolen or damaged luggage in 2006.
Qantas carries 36 million passengers a year and says about one in 200 has problems with lost luggage. About 90 per cent of the time the bags are returned within 48 hours. Virgin Blue says old tags on bags can be to blame for luggage going missing. Another problem was people taking the wrong bags from the carousel.
There is little travellers can do
to prevent their luggage being mishandled or lost. However, the following quick
and easy tips can safeguard your luggage from being lost indefinitely:
• Clearly label all your luggage
with secure tags on the outside and inside, giving your name and contact details
• Remove old tags and barcode stickers
• Label individual items in case your luggage is damaged and spills open
• Keep travel documents, cash, bank cards and irreplaceable jewellery with you
• Never pack home and car keys in check-in luggage
• Never pack essential medications in check-in luggage
• Make sure your luggage bag is in good condition and all zips, buckles and
clasps work
• The most popular bag colour is black, so buy something distinctive
• Check in early to avoid any last-minute rush
• Tighter security at airports means some luggage previously considered
hand-luggage may now have to be checked in, so pack very carefully
• Don't forget to retrieve items taken on board a flight and placed in the seat
pockets or overhead lockers.
• Keep a list of all items you pack
• If your luggage is lost, notify the airline immediately
• Have some travel insurance because the airline may not cover all your losses
