Last minute hotel reservation!

Editors Note ::

Hello and welcome to the August edition of the Frequent Flyer Gazette. Here down under its the last month of winter and that means plenty of cold and flu germs going around.

Ive fallen victim just recently, hence the slight delay in this months newletter landing in your inbox. My apologies!

Over on the other side of the planet though, US and Europe are in full summer and you can see what the holiday rush is doing to the frequent flyer programs over there. Just check out this newsletter and youll get a rough idea of how the airlines are tripping over each other in the rush to get the punters flying on competing airlines.

This month we also look at the recently announced changes to the Qantas Frequent Flyer program.

I hope you enjoy the reading and dont forget to follow it up with a visit to the Frequent Flyer Bulletin Board for a good-old chinwag with other members on whats making news amongst frequent flyers like yourself.

Cheers,

Adrian
Editor, Frequent Flyer Gazette

Qantas reforms

The big news doing the rounds this month concentrates around the changes to the Qantas Frequent Flyer program. It is the first time in almost two years that the program has been altered. The reforms will be implemented at two stages part now and part from the start of next year.

We have examined the changes in detail and have reported our findings in the Frequent Flyer Clubs News Watch section. As you are probably aware the Frequent Flyer Club is our premium subscription service, and you need to be a paid-up subscriber to use its services. However, given the importance of the changes, we have made this article available to readers of the Frequent Flyer Gazette.

To access the article go to www.frequentflyerclub.com.au, click on the 1st item in News Watch. You will be asked for a UserName and Password. The special login to access this report is UserName: qantaschange Password: password.

Important note: this is a temporary account which give you access to the article entitled 11/07/03: Changes to the Qantas Frequent Flyer program only. To access other features and services, you will need to join the Frequent Flyer Club.

Virgin Atlantic changes

Like Qantas, Virgin Atlantic has also made a few changes to its Flying Club program.

But instead of reducing economy class benefits, its increased the number of points earned on full economy to 125 percent, while qualifying discount economy earns 100 percent of miles flown.

Flying Club Gold members will earn an extra 25-percent irrespective of which class they choose to travel.

Reward costs to several destinations and upgrade costs have also been reduced. And you can upgrade directly from economy to the top class for 60,000 miles.

Status upgrades costs have also been reduced, while gold members will get a free companion ticket for any class when they renew their membership.

Keep out

Qantas has issued a reminder that while it owns Australian Airlines some of its privileges do not extend to the Asia dedicated carrier.

While its possible to redeem Qantas Frequent Flyer points for award flights on Australian Airlines, the benefits of being a frequent flyer stop there.

We would like to remind members that you cannot earn Frequent Flyer points when travelling on Australian Airlines, Qantas says.

Additionally, Qantas Club members are not able to access lounge facilities when travelling on Australian Airlines.

Flying rumours

We hear United has ditched its plans to start a low-cost carrier Starfish.

Its hard to say why the plans have been dropped, some say unions may have blocked the go-ahead worried the airline would be staffed by workers on lower wages than at United Airlines.

Desperation or generosity?

United is offering free economy tickets to any of its or Star Alliances international destinations for first and business class travellers.

All thats required is a purchase of an international roundtrip ticket in one of those classes before September 14. There are no limits on how many tickets can be earned.

Star Alliance partners include Singapore and Thai airlines.

Meanwhile, Uniteds freebie has urged its competitors to offer similar deals.

American Aadvantage, Continental OnePass and Northwest WorldPerks are offering almost identical deals and in the same time frame.

In brief

Alaska Airlines is offering its Mileage Plan members 1,500 bonus points for taking out one of their vacations packages.

America West FlightFund voted Best Elite Level program at the recent Freddie Awards will fast track members to the Silver Elite status if they book six round trips with the airline before the end of September.

In Canada, Membership Rewards members who transfer their points into Delta SkyMiles before August 31 will get a 34 percent bonus.

Delta is offering 15,000 SkyMiles for business class passengers flying from the US to Europe and up to 10,000 for economy class travellers.

2. MEMBERS' TALK

Will the cheaper Virgin Blue Blue Room lounges steal the business clientele from Qantas, asks one of the senior members of the Bulletin Board.

This is a real worry The access to the QF lounge and use of its facilities was the reason why businesses allowed staff to fly with them. Now that this edge has been lost we can only hope for more competitive fares from QF to halt what may be an exodus, the member posted.

But that thinking has been challenged by another Bulletin Board user who says: VB are promoting their clubs as a non-business room. In fact they're promoting the fact that it's a good place to play games like the Playstation. Now while that probably appeals to us all, I'm sure the boss won't like the idea that you're going in there to play games.

Our Bulletin Board is always full of informed members exchanging their opinions on the latest developments in the world of frequent flyers. It also features some handy tips from those who have done it all when it comes to airline travel.

Recently, one of the contributors sent in this observation:
If you are planning a trip using Qantas points to London with a stop over in Asia and a side trip to Europe, get a combined Qantas/BA ticket as this is 10,000 points cheaper than using Qantas all the way.

I was quoted 120,000 points for a Qantas ticket: Syd/Singapore/London/Rome. I was then given another quote of 110,000 points for an itinerary using Qantas to Singapore and then BA for the remainder of the journey.

Strange, but true!

Poor effort

Chicago Tribune has recently reported on its long investigations into the painful saga of its home-town United Airlines.

The newspaper reports the airlines trouble have little to do with terrorist attacks of 9/11 and a poor performing economy, but rather a chronicle of self-interest, self-delusion and self-inflicted wounds.

Happy bunch

A recent WebFlyer Airpoll in the US has shown 60 percent of respondents who are members of frequent flyer programs have never complained about the service they receive.

Only about a third have complained once or twice and as many have never really got a satisfactory response. More than half of the complaints were sent in via E-mail.
