Hi all

I'm relatively new to the Virgin frequent flyer scene. Previously I was with Emirates flying regularly between PER-LHR. Now that I've moved to AUS, these trips have stopped and the pleasure of Business class along with it.

Qantas aside, my partner and I have the Virgin High Flyer CC, are using the BP fuel offer, and have made many of our regular online purchases through Velocity partners. We're currently at 50,000pts and estimated to earn 55,000pts per year through the above.

We've yet to use the Two41 deal which comes with the CC and are most likely to use two domestic/short haul international flights per year and one long haul flight every other year.

What tips, tricks, do's and dont's would you be able to provide us?

Would love to know more and would love to become an active part of this community. Much appreciated.

Family pooling of SC's to who ever does the most flying.

Use your CC for everything no matter how small.

Be careful with using BP as it isn't always worth the cost for a few points.

Don't buy from certain retailers just because you get points in a lot of cases yhe extra you pay isn't worth the points you get in return.

The 241 isnt as good as it used to be and is often the same price as 2 sale fares without needing to jump through all the 241 hoops.

Keep an eye out points offers when signing up to the Velocity Platinum Amex, every year they seem to run a 100k points offer for signing up. If you have a business there's 100k MR points bonus for getting an Amex Business Platinum card, tx points to Velocity. Connect your PayPal account to Velocity Amex - lots of points to be had if you use ebay etc on top of points for using ebay.

And when it comes time to redeem all those points, don't forget you can transfer then to SQ who will get you out of PER in comfort.

Probably goes without saying but don't waste your 2-for-1 on the cheaper flights like the SYD-MEL-BNE. I personally still find the 2-4-1 card good value as we use it for our SYD-MKY family trips (we used it for SYD-HTI as well this year). A lot of people complain about the lack of value but I think it is route-specific. It usually saves us at least $500/yr on those routes.

We do quite a bit of shopping online, so the portal is something to consider. But I wouldn't advise using the portal unless you were going to use that provider anyway. In addition to the 'stores' you can usually get 2pts/$ on stuff like eBay, Menulog, Book Depository, itunes. I probably get an extra 10k points each year doing stuff we would have done anyway using the portal (we also use cashback sites like Ebates).

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

When the VM card is coming up for renewal, ring to cancel. They inevitably tell you that you're wonderful and will give it to you for free (and push them enough and you may get 5000 VFF points as a bonus as well ;)).

Welcome AussieDuke! Assuming you don't hold status, these tips would have been helpful for me when I began flying with VA.

  • Constantly check the seat selection through the online check-in on the hours leading up to the flight. Seating zones previously not available for selection will begin to open up
  • If travelling with carry on luggage, ensure that when waiting to board, sit close to the entrance of the general boarding queue. This ensures that you board early to secure a space for your bag in the overhead bins
  • Before booking a flight, check the current promo codes or sales to provide a significant discount on your airfare
  • If you intend of flying a lot within the next 12 months, it's worth getting lounge access even if you think you will make gold status as VA provides pro-rata refunds. The lounge also gives you a place to hang out in times that there are delays (which is inevitable)
  • If you don't have lounge access, remember to check the I'm in the VA lounge thread and if you're lucky one of us will be around to guest you in
  • As others said, utilise family pooling, this is one of the velocity's greatest benefits

I could give you a few other tips if you could provide some other specifics like your location and status level (if you do hold any).

eReward surveys, get 750 VA points points for sign up/complete first survey and every 6000 survey points = 2000 Velocity points. Both hubby and I do them, earns us about 30k points per year.

We've changed some of our shopping habits, use the estore for things like menulog, kogan or epharmacy.

For seat purchase, I always look here to get the latest coupon codes.

Edit: Is the aussie post sign up for points deal still on? And last year KrisFlyer had a sign up=5000 points deal that I transferred to hubbys VA account so keep an eye out if they repeat it.

Maybe between now and January I won't be as enamoured with the card as a I once thought I was!

Family pooling has to be one of the greatest features of the Velocity FF program. By pooling the points and status credits of the whole household into one account, you can basically earn Silver, Gold or Platinum status in half, a third of a quarter of the time (depending on the number of linked accounts). If you're mostly travelling together anyway, then all you really need is for one person to have Gold or above status and you all have access to the lounges, long-haul upgrades and the rest of the benefits when flying.

Also, don't forget the old AFF saying "why fly direct, when you can connect?" Try to fly as many sectors as possible (assuming the cost is about the same as going direct) in order to earn more status credits and get to the next tier more quickly.

One more thing. Consider applying for the NAB Velocity Rewards Premium credit card. You earn 1.5 points per dollar for the Amex card, and they are currently offering 60,000 bonus Velocity points. The annual fee is just $150.

just curious, how much time do you spend doing this?

I spent about 10mins last night for about 400 ereward points (I wasn't eligible to complete the surveys but got 50 points per attempt).

To be honest, I speed through surveys without reading most of them because most are damn boring. A long survey would be about 15mins for 500 or 1000 ereward points, quite often my review at the end is too long a survey for too little points but they add up. On the weekend I spent about 30mins and got about 3000 ereward points, its just a matter of waiting for surveys to come though. I do use a junk email account to keep them separate.

Sorry if this is a silly question, but how many Velocity points is an ereward point worth?

Thanks for the reply. Seems to be worthwhile, so I'll jump on the bandwagon :)

see post #10.

The conversions vary depending on the amount and are:
1200:250,
2000:500,
3500:1000 &
6000:2000.

For erewards just answer no if you don't want to waste time or just need some points to keep your VFF account alive.
Low income or not fitting criteria comes up too, or they have gotten enough from your demographics.
There are some surveys that can take half an hour.
Also some surveys are harder than others.
Also you just can't join erewards willy nilly, have to be referred to it.
I joined via an Accor hotel stay.
Will put some erewards points to Accor and some to VFF.
