I've never done one of these before but as I'm sitting in the Air Asia premium red lounge in KL with a couple of hours to spare so I thought writing about my experiences may be fun and useful for someone.

I managed to grab some return flights from Melb -Bali on the premium flat beds for the grand sum of $281 return. It was during a sale and I'm not sure if it was a price error or not but the premium class was selling for the same as cattle class. Not only do you get a lot more comfort but luggage and a meal are included for free! Unfortunately a few months later I was informed that Air Asia were to cancel their Melb to Bali flights. My choices were to get a full refund or to reroute through KL. I took the later option and here we are.

Check in was drama free and I avoided the long snaking queue and only had to wait for one large group of travellers in front of me in the premium line. As I was headed to the departure gates a man stopped me and asked me for a favour. My mind immediately thought of all the possible scenarios leading to being sentenced to death in a foreign country. However, it was only to guide his elderly mother in law with very limited english skills who was traveling alone back to KL. It would slow me down a bit but I accepted the task as any decent human should. It could be your mother or grand mother who needs help some day.

All was fine going through x-rays and immigration, the airport wasn't very busy at midnight on a Saturday night. The old lady waited patiently while I got my GST refund for my iphone and off we continued onto gate 20, possibly the furthest gate in the airport. The GST counter was of course busy with lots of tourist claiming a mountain of goods and not being aware of rules around receipts needing names and addresses for large amounts. We got to our gate with about an hour to boarding time. As the boarding call started I pointed the old lady towards the line and had to gesture for her to stay as I went on ahead to claim my priority boarding! I'm a nice guy but I'm not giving up my priority boarding :) The last I saw of the old lady was when I pointed her to the back of the plane as I sat in my comfy spacious seat. Mission accomplished.

There was 12 seats in the premium section, 2 rows of 2 - 2 - 2. There was only 7 of us on board so we had plenty of room to spread out. I've added a couple of photos but they don't really show much. Haven't mastered the art of taking photos for these trips reports without feeling awkward. The seat reclines back into a bed but it is not quite horizontal so you are left lying on a slight angle. I kept feeling myself slipping downward while sleeping but it was much better than being in cattle class still. Pillows and blankets were provided free of charge but there was no entertainment. Not that it was needed as it was lights out and bed time after the meal. Meal quality isn't any better in the premium class. The only difference being you get a tray with your food.

About 8 hours later we landed in KL and departed from the plane quite promptly. It was a good 20 minute trek going through KLIA2 airport, through the x-rays, across to the satellite building and into the premium red lounge. Showed my boarding passes and got given my wifi password and told that I had to monitor my own flights as there was no boarding calls. The lounge is quite spacious with lots of seating and power points. There is even a beanbag room which is where I'm sitting right now typing this. Food and drinks is very basic. Some sandwiches and triangle things with some low quality meat inside. Nasi lemak rice with sauce and those fish and nut thing but there was no egg or meat. Drinks consisted of coke, tiger beer, some very diluted orange flavoured drink and a coffee machine. I've added some pictures of the lounge. There was also a VIP room which you had to ask for access. Didn't look too special though, just some nicer looking chairs and a TV. I much prefer this bean bag room.

Lounge access is free for all premium flatbed and premium flex customers. Other guests are able to gain access for 79RM. I'm headed to Bali next but I don't think the next plane has premium flatbed seats. I've got stays at the Four points Kuta and Conrad Bali which I will do reports on. Also a few other non chain hotels which I will try and do reports on too but are probably of less interest for people here. That's all from me for now. Thanks for reading :)

Yes, $281 AUD return, it was quite a deal.

I went back to check the food again and there was some fried eggs added, that's good enough for me :)
Also standard cereals and toast. Also added pics of the toilet and shower.

Well I had no idea that Air Asia had a lounge in klia2! Do you know if it's a new thing?

I flew KUL-MEL earlier this year in "premium flatbed" class and was not aware of any such lounge at the time.

Thanks for the write-up. Not everyone here stays exclusively at chain hotels so I am sure your thoughts & photos will be appreciated

Many thanks for the pics of the new lounge. Much nicer than the priority pass options by the looks.

Your next flight will be on a narrow body so definitely no flat bed, indeed no premium class at all

Thanks potm. Do you have a pic with of the seat in the lie flat position. Seems like a nice lounge not too crowded!. Are towels and toiletries provided?

Nice of you to assist a fellow passenger. What was the outcome of the elderly lady your escorted back to KUL?

Yeah definitely no premium, didn't even qualify for priority boarding on the second flight.
Didn't get a pic of it reclined but I'll try to remember of the way back.

Checked into 4 points Kuta. They welcomed me as a gold member, manager came over to shakd my hand. Was offerred welcome drinks or points, I took the points. No mention of an upgrade but I believe I was given a one step upgrades. It seems the rooms just vary based on the view anyway. I had booked the cheapest. Pretty standard room and bathroom. Will check out more of the place tomorrow. Will post photos later, can't figure out how to do it on my phone.

Have checked out of Four Points Kuta and am in the Lokha Ubud now. My stay at the Four Points was pleasant with only 2 gripes. The bathroom had a bit of a weird smell and the lack of uber access. The hotel is in some small streets with signs which say Uber is not allowed. They can some times get in but the hotel itself won't let them in the gate. To get my uber to Ubud I had to request a few before one was brave enough to drive towards the hotel. He then had to park nxt to it and I had to walk out to meet him. It seems they do this on purpose so guests are forced to use their taxi services.

The drive to Ubud took 1.5 hours and the cost was 149k plus a 5k toll. As a comparison, a bus ticket would have cost 80k. With 2 people, it is already cheaper to uber it. I didn't even bother to ask how much it would have cost if I booked a car through the hotel.

The Lokha Ubud is a nice resort style hotel a bit away from the main town. It is quite peaceful and tranquial but there is not much to do here besides a pool. There's free afternoon snacks each day at 4 for all guests. Shuttle bus into town 4 times a day there and back. They should make this much more regular. There's a walking path which takes about 30-40 mins to get to town which is quite scenic.

Points have posted today for the Four points stay. Still waiting for the bonus promo points. I had a double points promo and a 1.5k points bonus for the first stay. Hopefully they post soon. Will post pictures later.

All bonus points for Starwood have posted, quite quickly as well. Bonuses came a day after the base points were posted. Also got bonus points from Uber during the stay period.
It seems Uber is banned in quite a few areas of Bali. Drop offs are allowed but they are not allowed to come pick you up from a lot of locations. Some drivers are better at others on getting around this. I'm not sure who blocks them but some drivers will just say Uber is not allowed there while others will turn up. It is quite annoying as Uber is significantly cheaper than even the proper metered Taxis. And of course those starpoints!

While Ubud was quite picturesque, I probably wouldn't return. Not really my thing. Getting a ride out of the Lokha was a bit of challenge, had to fire up all my apps, Uber, Grab and the local Blue Bird taxi app. In the end I got a blue bird metered taxi all the way to Nusa Dua which came to 370k. It would have been about half of this with Uber and a bit more expensive than Uber using Grab. Journey took just over 2 hours with some heavy traffic going past the airport area.

The stayed at the Melia resort which I got cheaply due to a price error from Agoda. The Resort itself had everything you would expect but nothing stood out to me. Staff there as well as everywhere else I've been were always nice and say hello whenever they see you. Apart from a short visit to Uluwata temple, I didn't do much except hang out at the resort. Food and drinks are about double outside but you can prepay 1,2,3 million and get 10,15,20% off respectively. Overall a pleasant and relaxing stay in Nusa Dua.

Going from Nusa Dua to Sanur was the only trip where I had no trouble getting an Uber. Either they are not blocked in Nusa Dua or I just got lucky. The ride took about 40 minutes with not much traffic and I believe cost about 80 something K. Sanur is like a much more relaxed version of Kuta. Next to the beach with lots of shops and restaurants around. Traffic is much less which makes it a lot easier to get around. I stayed at a small relatively cheap but very central hotel named Nesa Sanur. Had a small pool and it was a pleasant stay without drama. Now to post some pics.

uber is a pain in bali but there's no reason the driver can't come into the hotel to pick up - if you call the driver and tell them to advise the security staff they are picking you up and your surname they'll be allowed in (just don't mention uber).

we took many ubers in bali recently - the service is ok but the restrictions are a pain (had someone come up to us on the street and tell us not to book an uber just because we were using our phones!). we ended using a full day driver more often and only uber when going for dinner or massages on the spur of the moment which was fine.

It's definitely more than just the hotel security. A lot of drivers are afraid for some reason. Some sort of taxi gangs or something. Just makes me want to take uber more but some of the drivers are hopeless.
