Your insurance company customer service agent notices your date-of-birth in the policy details and asks if you have a seniors card. Then suggests joining Nation Seniors to obtain an extra 15% discount on the premium renewal. Saved me about $330 on my home and content insurance policy. So I took out a Lifetime membership which will be fully funded by next insurance policy renewal.

I am sure there must be lots of other ways of knowing, but can't remember any right now ...

I've always said, the first kid who gives their seat up for me on a bus will get an earful ;) :)
I caught the tram recently and it was packed - only a few stops and happy to stand and some stranger berated this young kid and said don't you think this lady deserves a seat - I couldn't tell her to p!ss off without seeming ungracious but I was not happy

The only reason they check your identification is to see if you're eligible for the senior's discount.

I don't need anything to tell me I'm old. My kids do remind me occasionally but not as often as my doctor does.

It's called good manners. Don't berate some one for reinforcing them. Too many people are bereft of good manners today. You may not need the seat, but plenty of others do :)

There does seem to still be a few places around the world that I visit that encourage consideration and manners. If for example, a person offers me say a seat for whatever reason they may have, i would certainly not embarrass them, but quietly thank them very much whether I actually took the seat or not. Being appreciative of other people's manners shows good manners and community awareness.

I was about 4 years ago when this happened to me.

TBH I was a bit shocked (Do I look that old?) - but I smiled when I realised what was up and gracefully declined.

I have continued to do the same the couple of times it has happened since.

When you work and mix socially with a group of 30 somethings and then you notice yourself in a mirror !!

and I did but I don't want people to think I look old because I'm still only 38 (at heart)

I always feel in that situation refusing the seat makes people look older (because it makes them seem rude and grumpy) and also that they're in denial :)

When your name appears last on the list ... and you realise the list is not alphabetic order

When you realise that the kids entering your profession were not even born when you entered the profession.

I prefer to think of it as being experienced rather than being old though.

I work with lots of young people (18-early 20s, basically young enough to be my children) and we were having a conversation recently and one of them had to translate for me. I felt very old.

Still, they are respectful of my life experience and I've helped a few of them with career advice and being a person who'll listen without being judgemental.
