Well not exactly, however, I have a fear of flying on an A380, and guess what, in T minus 65 days, I will be winging it across the Pacific in an A380. The 737 connection to LAS, the MD80 connection back - no issues, the 744 home, bring it on, I just couldn't get suitable flights to avoid the A380...

The SYD F lounge will get a hammering before I depart, thats all I can say... :(

All you will miss is the old 747 engine roar. The A380 feels like it lifts off at a slow speed and quietly makes it's way up and over the Pacific.
Time is right for you to start looking at the shows that are on in town rather than thinking about an A380.

Yeah i'm the same - for me, the bigger the aircraft the more things that can go wrong ; ) Particularly on a relatively new aircraft type that is still going through it's paces (and to date: no major loss of life).

You'll love it - seriously!

I just used WP request yesterday to open up a J seat on the A380 for SWMBO - it's bankrupting my points balance, but she seriously hates flying - like seriously - but I know she'll actually, dare I say, maybe even enjoy the experience..

It's such a quiet, smooth, enjoyable aircraft, and the crew genuinely seem to love working on it.

From what some of the crew were explaining to me - the A380 cabin crew are only from within the A380 pool on specific contracts (for 2 years at a time I believe) - so they are the brightest and bubbliest :)

munitalP,

The A380 is widely considered to be the safest double-decker passenger aircraft in history.

Sure, the engines occasionally blow up, but there's four engines, and I haven't heard of a single A380 where more than one engine has blown up, EVER.

I trust this calms your nerves.

Regards,
russ

3:1 odds the 388 goes tech and is subbed by a 744 :D

(Of course by then, it could be in deathstar colours) :(

Take out the little issue of engines sh$&ing themselves and occasionally sending shards of metal into the fuselage, I love the 388! The experience of taking off, when you feel you're hardly even at walking pace, is awesome. So quiet too! Enjoy!

I waited a few years before getting on an A380 and I should have 3 A380 flights under my belt at the beginning of October.

The A380 is OK, nothing real special, and feels a little cramped in economy. And if you happen to be in row 80 on a QF A380 it feels like an eternity before you can disembark.

You'll be fine :) The A380 is fantastic.

Only time I've ever been nervous for a flight was when I was booked by work on Garuda Indonesia (before they were blacklisted). Didn't end up taking the flight as I got them to rebook it!!

Took my first A380 ride on Monday, SYD-LAX. It was pretty sweet, though I was up the pointy end (1K). Loved watching the taxi out and takeoff on Skycam :)

Very quiet. It felt heavy lifting off, but understandably.

Back on it for the return journey next Tuesday.

and feels a little cramped in economy.

Understatement of the century. It feels extrememly cramped in Y due to the extreme angle which the seats recline to. It's also the only time where I'd pissed off the guy behind me by reclining. I didn't have a choice (I didn't really feel like reclining that much myself to be honest), it just with the guy in front of me reclining his seat and the guy in front of him, well you get the idea.

I'd agree with that; there really isnt as much leg room as the ads make it look. I got stuck between a full recliner and a kicking child which made for a very uncomfortable trip...

Being a large 6'4" guy i'll respectfully dis-agree here. The QF A380 has a lot more leg room in whY than their 747's do.

I recently took one LHR-SIN-MEL, and it was the best flight in whY i've had, bar QR, who's 2-4-2 777's from MEL to DOH beat anything QF offers hands down (including some amazing levels of service, it's just a shame that DOH sucks so bad, at least until the new terminal is built).

At least on QF's 380's, my knees do not bash into the seat in front. I actually managed to get some rest on both segments! Reclining seats are annoying on any configuration, and I didn't find the QF ones to be any worse than the 747's TBH.

I'm only 5'8", but my knees do hit the seats in front; most of my height is in the hip to knee bit of my legs, and I've noticed (when I'm sitting on the train) that my legs usually stick out a lot further than most blokes...

Other than that though, the A380 is a good flight. Quiet-ish, room to move around and wander down to a snack bar etc. Nothing to be afraid of. :D

The 2 years contract is not limited to A380 but all metal (told to me by a permanent staff).

And no not all staff are brightest and bubbliest - am starting a new thread - didn't want to take over this one. "Not too happy with last segment on ADONE" if you want to read.

Fair enough - just my experience - but my top QF staff experiences in the last year or so have all been on the A380.

Put another way - all my A380 flights (in terms of staff experience) have been miles above my experience with QF crew on other aircraft - by a long way.

But as always YMMV.

I'm 6'2", so leg room is also very important to me. I can always tell when airlines are telling porkies when it comes to the amount of legroom on offer, as my legs fit properly in some Y seats, but not in others.

It wasn't the legroom I had a problem with, it was the recline (an almost "skybed" style attempt IMHO, without the space to make it work properly)

I am going a month earlier than you on A380 out of MEL to LAX. No issue for me.

Do the A380.

I enjoyed mine and will do it again.
