Just contacted Qantas to unfortunately cancel my Oneworld Classic Reward booking for next month due to the coronavirus issue. Qantas have slugged me with a 6000 points per person cancellation charge! Uncle was also travelling with us, but using his Star Alliance points. He got all points back and only charged €17! Pretty disappointing

As opusman points out - those charges are roughly similar. Qantas has a 'notional' value on their points of 0.07c each, so 6000 = ~AUD42.

Your travel insurance might cover you for the cost of the points, if the event is covered.

Not all star alliance cancellation policies are equal... Lifemiles charges AUD307 for a cancellation. United charges AUD115 for cancellations more than 60 days prior to departure, or AUD192 for cancellations within 60 days.

My uncle was to be charged more, but when he informed them that it was due to the coronavirus they reduced his charge

When you were building points in QFF and then later booked using those points I assume you knew what the cancellation fee was ?

Yes I was. Interestingly Star Alliance was going to charge my uncle more, but when they realised his cancellation was due to the coronavirus they waived the normal penalties.

Lifemiles gave you free cancellation? Lots of chatter that LM isn't budging on this unless the airline cancels the flight itself (ie coluntary cancellations are still subject to the regular fees)

Yes, on two separate bookings. In fact they refunded the miles immediately, taxes few days later and only later they actually canceled the flights. Odd procedure but it’s LM...

Looks like I’ll need to call LM in the next week or so to cancel two more bookings in April. Will update the results.

Are they accepting the coronavirus as reason to cancel? And are these flights to China? It's just odd that your experience seems to be completely different to other reports. Although if you are a frequent LM user maybe they are cutting some slack? (I notice that they can be very accommodating to regular users with offering alternative routes etc).

Yes they are accepting the coronavirus as valid reason.
None of the flights are to China.
Maybe they toughened up their cancellation policy recently similar to what BA did. I’ll find out soon enough.

Can confirm two more award cancellations with LM for travel in April. Again no issues at all, agent was very understanding and confined all fees will be waved.

They do have an updated policy re-cancellations, miles will be refunded within 7 days (used to be 1-2 days) and taxes within 30 days (used to be 14 days).

This is good news. The policy seems to be more 'official' now by all accounts. And fairly generous too in terms of routings cancelled.

I wonder if cancelled bookings are returning to award inventory.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Bad customer service from QF, no two ways about it.

This month I canceled award bookings with AA, KF and LM. Total cancellation charges were big fat ZERO!
It's been over a week now and no sign of my QFF points! 😡

Might have something to do with the QF website which is running very slow recently, points are not being updated on time.
