Was talking socially with a QF A380 captain tonight and he can't understand why they decided the Perth to London non stop was a good idea either. Then he dropped a really interesting comment "especially as we could have been flying there directly out of DRW ever since we got the A380"..
For the life of me I can't understand why they haven't been doing it either.... if direct to Europe is indeed a thing.

The economics of doing it with a 787 is probably different to doing it with an A380.....

Qantas has not had a competitive product for long haul travel out of Perth for quite a long time.

I'd say it's also Because WA has the highest percentage of English nationals in the country.
Around 30% of Western Australians.

And the largest group compared to other states. 10.1% compared to the national average.

Surely that would have some influence on it.

One reason PER was selected was Colin 'decided' to give QF $14M in corporate welfare with not a single string attached.

I assume that will get him a few more years in the CL now he is out of office....

Tongue in cheek but probably accurate. After listening to the Richard Fidler Conversations interview this week about the Tasmanian government and the history of gambling in the state you realise things don't change very much.

Well according to my mate the economics are practically identical to the SYD-DFW route and QF has been pushing that one hard for years. If this is the case I'm actually at a loss to understand why they haven't been flying direct to Heathrow from DRW for years.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

The $14 million matches an amount being paid by the Commonwealth to fund the extra costs for border security. It is no more 'corporate welfare' than the govenrment building roads to the airport.

As all of the facilities being duplicated are for the 'pleasure' of a single private entity, none of the facilities being duplicated are required at all and the facilities being duplicated are already scheduled for decommissioning before they are even completed, I stand by the 'corporate welfare' statement in full.

Also, remember it's not just PER-LHR service. It's a one-stop service from MEL-- QF9 - that is has been in existence for decades - that is now routing via PER instead of DXB (or SIN). The service is set up to serve three main markets, MEL/ADL-LHR, PER-Europe and PER-LAX (given the aircraft rotation, it will offer a competitive one stop service between PER & LAX with immigration clearance in PER).

I can bet the bean counters would have worked out the probability of the A380 V newer plans on long haul flights and how many seats they can fill in a average per trip

That's actually a really important point regarding fuel costs. That would make a big difference in newer aircraft.

I don't see that Darwin is any sort of attractive stop. You'll pick up minimal business from there, and it's simply a fuel stop. If you're already going that way, Singapore or HK are much more central stops, which maximise load, and minimise burn. And they're also great hubs. And whilst you are still stopping anywhere, it's not a direct operation.....
