why is Abu Dhabi airport so awful?

I fly Etihad because I like their in flight service, and their ground service and partners and lounges etc in Australia and Ireland are pretty good (being an Economy Class passenger with Silver status). (Let's not mention the call centre, as you can avoid using that.)

But, why, oh why, must Abu Dhabi airport be such an awful experience? I am now in Ireland having arrived yesterday from Sydney. In Abu Dhabi, with 3+ hours to transfer, I managed to spend not much more than about 30 minutes of that in the Al Reem lounge, having a beer and a shower. Far too much time was spent in the queue for that ridiculous bottleneck internal security checkpoint that you have to go through between Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 (twice in my case, because I forgot where Al Reem was, and so I should have gone straight to the lounge from my Sydney flight).

And worse was the actual Dublin departure gate - gate 40, which is with 39 and 41, simply isn't big enough for three almost simultaneous departures, plus others about an hour later. Numerous people got in the wrong queues, causing more disruption. This gate area was just complete chaos. Like the security checkpoint, it really makes you feel like you are in a Third World Country (and I use this outdated term on purpose) - all that standing around in queues and crowds meant by the time I boarded the flight the shower was long forgotten. And of course the flight departed late as a result of the chaos. And I'm not a big fan of being bussed to myu aircraft, which was parked in an unsalubrious cargo area. If I'd paid thousands of dollars for a Business Class fare, I would definitely not have been happy with the departure lounge and bus transfer experiences (do they get a different experience?).

Which reminds me, Al Reem lounge having just one shower, one WC ciubicle and one urinal for such a large seating area probably wouldn't pass Australian laws! Waiting for a shower is irritating, waiting for a WC is more than irritating! (Not that I was waiting for it, but others were, including an English man with his young daughter, which was very awkward, as men came in and out and used the urinal with the door open; he spent the whole time, probably 20 minutes, criticising her for the size of her bladder. I'm so glad I don't live in England any more.)

I know the airport isn't Etihad's, but as the major user surely they could influence it to improve?

Good things? The airplane seats (both flights) were much more comfortable than I remember (okay, much less uncomfortable) - footrests seem to have disappeared which is probably good for leg room. Toilets on the Sydney Abu Dhabi flight were positively palatial (at least the ones on the middle of the Economy cabin) largest I've ever come across on a plane, which makes for a much less cramped experience. Dinner Sydney to Abu Dhabi was poor - chicken biryani is not rice with a separate tasteless and almost inedible chicken dish; in biryani they are mixed in together. Breakfast was OK, typical airline fare, fairly inoffensive. Lunch Abu Dhabi - Dublin was a little better. Service was good - as always. A bunch of Ozzie young blokes in front of me on the Dublin leg managed to get the staff to serve them another rum and coke each about every five minutes, which tells you the service was attentive and uncomplaining; that tap was never turned off, though I noticed they switched to beer as we got closer to Dublin!

Both flights very full, so no extra elbow room for Peter. Should now have enough points for upgrade to Business for both legs on the way back in three and a half weeks.

Have you tried EY's lounge on DUB T2? It's not huge but it's very nice and the staff are excellent.

yes, hence my positive comments about the ground experience in Oz and Ireland. if only they didn't fly through Abu Dhabi! (Actually, I've had similarly bad experiences in many airports, and wild horses couldn't drag me to Heathrow again. Or Charles De Gaulle. But I like Etihad and I want them to do better.

Business class pax get access to a better lounge, and get on the bus first (with F, of course).

It seems to me Pete that you have issues with busy airports per se. Yes, LHR can take some time to navigate, but I'm always prepared for these relatively minor frustrations and don't let them ruin my trip.

"busy"is fine, "Busy and disorganised" is not!

I found AUH to be quite the opposite on both my trips through it last month.

Arriving from Sydney - easy and quick exit through Immigration, bags quick to arrive etc

Departing to LHR - check in through the business class facilities was super quick including own security. Irritating that as Gold VFF there was no lounge access in T3 and was not about to traipse to T1. Like the pre boarding checks at the gate as it makes boarding quick.

Transiting from CDG to SYD - the internal security clearance when you've just come off one flight was a pain and the queue huge but fast moving - probably because the staff were not concerned (did not even require liquids to be taken out). Back to same gate we were at for the LHR flight. This time another security check.

All staff were friendly and helpful, airport was busy but not heaving with people, toilets were clean and there was not miles of duty free to navigate. Had no issues with being bussed to gate on arrival from CDG - again it was quick and painless.

Found it quite pleasant compared to CDG!

As a side note - the EY lounge at CDG is very nice.

Yep, as you've noted it seems to be internal transfers that are bad. My previous experiences haven't been so poor, but have definitely been on the same spectrum but getting worse each time (e.g. the security check, gate experiences getting worse and worse).

Officious security checks don't worry me at all. I'd rather that than the slap-happy procedures i've seen at many airports which seem to have become complacent.

We bought duty free grog in Frankfurt on our way to Abu Dhabi with Etihad, and didn't have any trouble getting them in as carry-on. When we tried to do the same from Abu Dhabi to Melbourne, security insisted they be put into check-in. Different rules, but their call.

Yes, we pay for airfares, but we are guests at airports.

Actually not their rules and not their call. For the rules and (most of) the call you should look to the Australian Government.

No-one mentioned officious security checks. In fact, another poster implied that the security checks are pretty perfunctory because the queue is so big and they are keen to get everyone through! That's also my experience. I'd just like them to have more staff on it. Making passengers queue up a switched off moving walkway is not very elegant or pleasant, after a 14 hour flight. Of course only half the security screening stations were staffed. (Like Dublin airport immigration where there were only two staff to check the EU passport holders, so it was a little slower than it could have been, but I know the Irish government is broke).

Don't know why they need a security point between T1 and T3 in Abu Dhabi. Is T1 less secure than T3?

Like you Pete I enjoy flying Etihad. However as I have only ever travelled in J and the occasional F I've rarely had any airport issues as I spend so little time in it. Being 1st off the plane means you can walk briskly to the scrum at security then squeeze by the masses and use the priority queue. Then it's a few steps to the stairs to the lounge. While the J lounge can be busy best thing is to go straight to the spa and book a shower - usually you get in right away occasionally you wait a few minutes. The F lounge is fantastic with tons of space, great food and service. I have experienced the gate crush which is not good and the worst one was when I was in F but as you stand in the line and shuffle along you know that you will be turning left and all is forgotten.
I hope you get to upgrade for the return journey as you'll get all the benefits above at AUH (especially not having to use the Al Reem) but also the J service food and seats. Enjoy it and let us know your opinion.

Yep, it was actually worse on the way back to Oz, despite being in Business Class (that's J for those of who speak in abbreviations).

Transiting Abu Dhabi on the morning of Tuesday 2nd July I was able to join the priority queue at the infamous between terminals "security screening point" - but get this - there was no working metal detector for the priority queue, and we had to put our belongings through the x-ray, including shoes, then walk over and push in front of the regular queue. Which means your property could easily have been stolen while it was out of your sight. I think there were only two (maybe three) metal detectors in use. Gawd only knows how slowly the regular queue was moving.

Why did I put "security screening point" in inverted commas? Well, because unlike everywhere else (including the screen just before boarding return flight to Sydney) they don't require laptops or tablets to be taken out of hand luggage, nor liquids.

The pre-boarding security screen was just as bad as the last time. At least this gate (one of the ones in T1 I think) wasn't being shared with any other flights which reduced the chaos a little, but there still wasn't room in the gate lounge for everyone, so the screening queue just extended all the way back into the terminal, having come to a halt until boarding actually started and the gate lounge slowly emptied into the plane. And I mean slowly. This was a proper security screen, to Australian standards (or at least superficially so - liquids had to be x-rayed separately but not computers). How did they deal with Business and First Class passengers? By walking them to the front of the queue and pushing them in front of the cattle class passengers. Charming. I didn't bother, as there was no room in the gate lounge anyway.

The Business Class experience wasnt as good as I remembered it, mainly because I got an aisle seat on both slights, much less private than the window seats, and you are much more disturbed by passing traffic (some sliding up-down barriers would be good, even if only to keep your legs and upper body from being brushed by people passing you); I thought these seats did have them, but no). The cabins were full so no chance to change seats. My touchscreen wouldn't respond to touch and frustratingly the manual control was also playing up and difficult to use, despite two resets; not that there was anything I wanted to watch as there had been minimal changes in movies and TV shows from my outward journey. Made for a long boring trip.

Dublin business lounge was fantastic, and I had a lovely free meal and beers. Abu Dhabi Business Lounge busy but OK, and really the main thing I want there is a good shower, which I got (unlike Al Rheem on the outward journey, where the shower was a dripping tap that I had to wait in a queue for 30 minutes to use).

I may have to try another airline next time to avoid the Abu Dhabi airport "experience", though Etihad still have the fastest and most direct connections to Ireland.

Incidentally my Auction upgrade cost me about Au$850 for the long leg, and the short leg was done with points.

We flew EY for first time to Milan returning from Dublin. Can't criticise the airport too much considering Mascot is my home base. Midnight transit made the bus out to the plane bearable though felt sorry for those in Y who were packed in their bus like sardines whilst the adjoining J bus was largely empty.
they don't see to let any seat in J or F go to waste as both cabins were full on flight over. We took the 4 seats in Row 9 - the girls loved their secluded window seats and our centre seats were cosy and also set back from the aisle. Apparently they can setup a barrier screen if you don't know the person next to you but would impact on space. Agree the separate aisle seats would not be good as are right on the aisle and would always be the seats left for upgrades.
Direct aisle access was good but personal space in J was limited - at 5'10" and 80kg, I still felt cramped in my seat especially when sleeping. If travelling with a partner, would go VA whenever the chance next time if had to go EY or VA.

Interesting - previously when I've flown in Business Class (always operational upgrade, points upgrade, or auction upgrade) there've been empty seats, and I've had a window seat twice (sorry, not with the op upgrade, which was my first taste of busines class with Etihad).

The "interesting" comment is that in the queue to board the Sydney flight at Abu Dhabi there were two young American women in the queue behind me, and we eventually decided to pull the "priority boarding" card even though the staff weren't making any effort to find the priority passengers. they remarked that they had "never seen so much sand" as they could see out the windows from the Gate, "even though we're Middle Eastern" (they were, ethnically at least), and then "it's hot, even though we're Middle Eastern" (it was like an oven in the boarding tube). They promised we'd have a drink together on the plane for having banded together and bonded to jump the queue, but when we boarded, lo and behold off they went to the First Class cabin, never to be seen again. (They could at least have invited me up for a quick drink!) Either they have rich mummies and daddies or they'd upgraded with points too. It looked like First Class was full too.
