Hi

Managed to score a reward seat to LAX from BNE for early next year. Heading to vegas with the better half.. As a Plat Velocity member, who would be best to fly econ from LAX to Vegas for lounge access?

Cheers

Steve

You can choose Delta or Virgin America & earn points/status credits. I have flown DL within the US - perfectly acceptable. I haven't flown VX yet (will do so in January) but I can't see them being much different than VA.

I haven't been in DL's LAX lounge (yet) in T5 but VX's lounge in T3 is good in my opinion. Word of warning though - there's no showers in that lounge.

If you're connecting the same day I would second erkpod's advice and use DL. The onboard experience will definitely be inferior but I personally would value a shower in the Sky Club over VX's funky vibe for a one hour flight.

I did LAX to LAS a few months ago and used Delta over Virgin America. Flight availablility was about the same - but Delta was cheaper, discounted the 'extra legroom' seats, and had a nicer lounge.

Another option is to hire a car and drive 4 hours from LAX to LAS. It is a fine drive! Then you don't have to wait at airport for flight delays!

But if you are immediately connecting then yes DL/VX is fine. But if you are buying separate ticket they may not check you luggage through if your VA flight is delayed!

You could try for something different a stretch limo, with fully stoked bar, for two people it may not be the cheapest but for more than two can be great value. Have organised the trip for friends Christmas 2011 and the limo with snacks and bar (beer/spirits/champagne/soft-drink) was a little under $550 and went straight to the hotel and you can set the schedule. It is only 4.5 hours (if you leave at the right time). Remember to tip the driver, you can also stop along the way for fresh air etc.

Personally, I'd hire a car and drive. By the time you get to LAX, allow 3 to 5 hours for the connecting flight you could be in Vegas.

Personally when heading to LAX, if I'm going somewhere less than about 700miles I rent a car, prefer the fresh air (yes ok it's southern California) and helps me adjust to the time change.

If you don't care about alliances, consider South West.

Agree. I've done it twice LAX-LAS with Southwest, although at the time I had no status with VA, but the "ace" was cheap prices inc. luggage. It's such a short flight, I preferred to save the cash. They even have no change fees. Never had a problem with several flights taken with SWA and wouldn't hesitate to fly them again.

Ive done DL/AA/VX between LAX & LAS as well as driven it a couple of times.

They're all as bad as each other but its only one hour so just go for whatever suits your budget and schedule best.

Hi

Thanks for all the feedback, went with AA as a Gold Qantas FF as well.. so we get some free luggage with them via one world. This was about the same $ as VX and DL without the add on for the checked bags.. so worked out ok.

We did consider driving, decided against it.. had a bad exp with a rental car in the past..

Cheers

Smart move IMO.

Having done the drive a couple of time in both directions it's really a bit overly simplistic to say that in the time it would take to transit and fly you could drive because it doesn't take into account collecting luggage, getting to the car depot, lining up to wait to collect the car (which on my most recent LA trip was over 2 hours) etc...in my experience it's still cheaper, quicker and easier 9 times out of 10 to fly it.

FWIW, about 2 years ago I flew US to LAS on $49 fares oneway - went via PHX - was good for my *A status.
