Anyone know what's going on in Sydney in the middle of Feb? Hotel prices are ridiculous at the moment (eg Hilton for Feb 19-21 are about $600 a night!!).

And they have been ridiculous for a while (I booked back in Nov/Dec for around the 21st-23rd Feb) - I don't know but Mardi Gras parade isnt on until 1st of March so that wouldn't explain it. Maybe SYD hotels are just generally ridiculous? Or just on weekends?

Mardi Gras is a month-long festival that culminates in a parade and party on the first weekend of March. For most of February there's lots of other events on including galleries, performing arts, sporting events and the like.

I found it. Actually 2 different things Soundwave 2014 and Rapture 2014- look at the lineup:

Green Day, Avenged Sevenfold and Stone Temple Pilots (with Linkin Park's Chester Bennington) will headline next year's annual Soundwave Festival.

Plus Lose yourself Sydney, Eminem will be back on Australian shores next year and headlining Rapture, a game-changing rap and urban event to be held at ANZ Stadium on Saturday 22 February 2014.
Eminem will be performing the captivating and ....etc



So as far as I can see that weekend SYD will be full of rock/rap stars and their fans.

Well that explains it for me too. Similarly struggling like the OP to comprehend the prices of rooms in Sydney in mid-February.

I thought it might have been just another business week until I saw most things booked out until only the highest priced rooms were left (viz. rack rates). Even redemptions are at a bit of a premium.

I managed to snag a "Best Price Guarantee" on IHG Intercontinental for this period. Olotels.com has MUCH better prices. Be sure to book the "FULLY FLEXIBLE" rate on IHG or risk being stung if they don't approve.

Well done, they are good when you get them, sadly the rules have been tightened since a few enjoyed it a bit much.

It took me three times to get it approved. Zuji.com.au was rejected as somehow prices mysteriously changed the following day!
