We have been looking at booking Y award seats from SYD to ADL at the end of September 2018, and none available on QF for 27th, only J award seats available and Y fares really expensive. Does anyone know why? Is there a big event in Adelaide for that day? It is 11 months out, and no Y award seats? Maybe QF does not release those until later?

Yes. The AFL grand final 2018 is Crows v Port Power and it is being held at Adelaide Oval.

/removes tongue from cheek ;)

Thank you, Anna and Pushka. I did google the football thing, but could not see the dates. Anyway, it would be a Thursday, not the weekend so not sure why no Y award seat, only 2 J award seats for each flight on that day, and the cash fares were up by more than $50 or more on all flights. We have now decided to book no-frill no checked bag Y seats for SYD-ADL with Virgin - about $100 pp cheaper than QF. Never flown Virgin before, so it will be an interesting experience!

Myrna I just noticed you posted. I haven’t booked from Perth to Adelaide just yet but I am thinking about being there with Mrscove for the AFF gathering. Really not sure what is causing the lack of redemption seats.

Hi cove, We took advantage of the Qatar 2for1 business class fares from Scandinavia to Australia - flying from Stockholm to Adelaide next September (as there were no cheap seats to MEL or SYD). We arrive in ADL late afternoon (Monday 17th September 2018), too late to take QF flight to SYD (curfew) so we will stay in Adelaide one night. It will be lovely if you & Mrscove will be in Adelaide then we can catch up :) Very strange that QF won't release Y seat for redemption towards the end of September (Thursday 27th September 2018) so we bought cheap Y seats from Virgin for SYD to ADL in order to take the QR flight to DOH in the evening.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

All Virgin fares come with checked baggage. Otherwise, just keep your expectations low (and eat before the flight!) and I'm sure you won't be disappointed. :)

Thanks, Mattg. Agree, we will keep our expectations very low. They allow us to select seats at the back of the plane :( We will go to QF terminal before the VA flight and make use of our Priority Pass cards to get some food before the flight :) Am not sure about VA fares included checked bag. However, we always travel light - with carryon only, and no checked bag - hope they don't give us problem with carryon.

To clarify, all domestic VA fares do come with baggage. (Flights to New Zealand don't.) For ADL-SYD you'd get a bag, but if you don't need it anyway then all the better. :)

Myrna today I was transferring some Citi points across to Virgin to qualify for the 15% bonus in November. Virgin has been pretty nice running Perth to Sydney (in business). have not tested their economy but I have heard the economy part of the plane arrives almost at the same time as the business class bit of the plane. JohnK let me know this recently......

:p:D

I'd also be checking the school holiday dates.....

September is too early for SA holidays. OZAsia is popular but not THAT popular interstate. I do remember this year that there was a tour group from NZ who pretty much booked out at least plane in late September.

Have a friend doing the ashes test this year. Airline prices are stupid high, accomodation available for $1000 a night in a 2* somewhere about 100 km from the Oval. Seems it doesn't take much to overrun a sleepy little country town. Maybe lots of people are having to fly into the east coast to OzAsia?
