Each time we fly to far away places we start to wonder what we should be doing to arrive in good shape to get started at the other end. Living in Perth can add 5 hours flying time to get to Chicago or New York .
We would appreciate thoughts on travelling and arriving without jet lag.
Being on the wrong side of 60 I don't believe 60 is the new 40!

Yes opusman we do the limo and the F and J.
What else to avoid waking up at 1am for a week?

Interesting.. how/when do you take it?

I'll preface this by saying this is not medical advice and before taking any new medications you should consult your own doctor.
I take one 5mg tablet 1 hour before bedtime at my destination. I take my first dose en-route. I continue that daily at the destination for 3-5 days and repeat on the way back home.

Stay up. Don't sleep in or nap during the day when you destinate. On a SYD-LAX we would leave typically at 1030 local, but get to LAX at 0630 local, which is 0230 Sydney time, so the equivalent of getting up at 2.30 in the AM.

So you put in a really long day (or rather a really short night), and you should have no trouble sleeping the next night for 8 hours. Well, I don't. Then again, with years of military and shift work, I could sleep through a space shuttle launch.

Not sure how Perth flights affect this theory though.

To make the Intl 1030am departure you fly a red eye that lands in SYD at some dud time.:(

Making it an extremely long travel experience given the overnight in Y PER-SYD (cove says he'll go J, lucky him!!!) equates to mot much sleep.

Re the OP as much sleep and water as possible.

If I am going QF to LAX out of Sydney or Melbourne I don't go the red eye out of Perth. Horror flights are off my agenda.
The only overnight flight I do is the 1am or 2am SQ flight to SINGAPORE to get to London quickly and I use my sleep machine on battery power on the super wide seat.
I use the swimming pool after I get to the other end, wear eye shades when sleeping and drink a lot of water en route.
Will ask my cardiologist about Melatonin as I have not done that.
The swimming pool has been good.

I swear by Melatonin. I avoid prescription sleeping tablets.

Agree and the right dosage. I bought 10mg in LOTFAB and they knock me out more than scripts. I take 3mg SA and they work better.

If I take sleeping tabs, prefer short acting.

I have found familiarity helps greatly, I all areas. I have been a regular world traveller for years. I keep learning something new every time.

My preferred way to get to Los Angeles and back out of Perth is on SQ in J as the connections can be really sweet. The SQ A340-500 100 seat all business class works well for us as it is so quiet.

this might sounds silly, but on overnight flights, I have a little routine:
* Apply Bio Oil to areas of exposed skin to prevent moisture loss and dryness (eg. face, neck, decolletage, arms, and hands) makes me feel much more comfortable (and also look better rested on waking).
* Applying Lubricating eye drops
* Applying Fess Frequent Flyer nasal spray. Sounds stupid, but does help with losing moisture through the nose, and is meant to lubricate the mucous membranes to prevent bugs getting in to the body through there.
* Applying eye mask
* Applying ear plugs
* Putting on travel socks
* Drinking some water
* Avoiding alcohol & caffeinated drinks before sleeping

If I do these things, especially the Bio Oil, I find I sleep much better and arrive in better shape.

Yeah I've heard that's a Great flight. What do you normally pay for a sector? It's out of Newark ?

Not eating works for me. Read this: Hunger helps fend off jet lag

I don't have to fast for 16 hours. On my most recent international flight MEL-LAX QF93 in Y+ then QF 107 LAX-JFK in Y my routine was as follows.

Depart MEL 0935 hours (we were about half an hour late so departure was about 1000 hours). As soon as I boarded the plane I set my watch to time in NYC e.g. Mel 0935 is NYC 1935hours. (Check for daylight savings in the country you travel to).

After we take off (I can't remember how long we were flying for, however) lunch was served. This I considered to be my dinner in NYC. After I ate given that on any average day I don't eat again after dinner this meant that I was not going to eat again till breakfast prior to arriving in LAX. My fast was effectively the time spent sleeping (as it was night in New York during the flight). When we were woken up a few hours prior to arriving in LAX I ate breakfast as it would have been breakfast time in NYC.

Time do the run through the terminal, passport control, luggage, customs, give my luggage back to Qantas, make my way to the gate to wait for departure.

QF107 0840 (1140 hrs NYC) arrive 1705 hrs. Take off we are served a tray this I considered my lunch in NYC. Sometime after the meal the FA's came around with snacks (I think was fruit and other little nibbles) which I declined as I don't normally eat at the time they brought the snack. On arrival in NYC, collect luggage and take bus to hotel. It was about 2000hours that I was sitting in my room eating a light dinner c/o room service.

I went to bed about midnight and it took my about half an hour to fall asleep, I woke up naturally at about 8am feeling refreshed and ready to go.

I was in the States for about three weeks travelling from NY to WI to CA and up to WA and each night I could fall asleep within a few minutes and providing I didn't have a late night I had no problems waking up in the am.

The only thing I did find was that I was tired at 1600hours. It didn't matter where I was in the country (regardless of timezone) but everyday at 1600hrs I was in desperate need of a coffee. Methinks it was more b/c I was up and out of my hotel room early, "running" around on the go all day and by 1600hrs I was just tired from having such a full day.

So basically what I do before departure is:

Figure out departure and arrival times in my new time zone. Work out when I normally eat around these times and eat ***only*** then, no matter how delicious the turkey panini smell (and turkey is one of my favourite types of meat). So as in my example above, as it is night in NYC no way am I going to be "midnight snacking" b/c I don't normally eat at these times.

Caution: those who have problems with their blood sugar should not attempt the fast. Those who may not have problems with their blood sugar per se (e.g. hypoglycaemia or someother medical condition) but if you do get very irritable and short tempered when you are hungry you probably should not attempt the fast as the last thing you need is to be screaming at the passport control guy at LAX b/c I am sure they will deny you entry for harrassing them :!: even if you don't get denied entry you don't need to be screaming as some poor soul (FA, Customs inspector, etc) just because you are hungry as it is not their fault.

hths,
ck

eta: make sure you drink a lot of water to stay hydrated (avoid caffeine and alcohol).

I have only been doing the one to Los Angeles and I think it is 204,000 SQ points plus taxes for the return in Standard so real money it works out sub $2k.
Do I really have to give up the KRUG and Dom Perignon and finally the French reds. That would really hurt!

I agree with this. I dont sleep much on the plane but I still try to stay awake through the whole day. If Im really struggling Ill give myself a 30min nap around 4.30pm (sleep with my iphone in my hand so the alarm will wake me); then Im good to go for the rest of the day/night, and wake up the next day with no sign of any jet lag.

I graduated from Fess Frequent Flyer to Vicks after I spoke to a Cathay pilot (retired).
Lubricating eye drops....got an over the counter brand and detail missafternoondelight ??
Cutting down the food and alcohol...hmmm you know how to hurt....I can easily drop the dessert ....Mrscove does zero alcohol so its only when I fly or entertain that I go for it.
Probably adjusting my watch to the final destination time would work ok.
It is much less of a problem going to London as the time difference is so much less.

As I get further down the track I think the trips will be longer than the 10 to 15 days so that may help.

We remain amazed at the business folks we meet who get out of their PJs ,don their suits and head straight off to a business meeting when they have travelled into Australia from New York on QF12 or an equivalent.
KRudd seems to be able to do it even though he has had at least 3 major operations.
Thanks for your thoughts so far....I am very glad I asked.

For an Oz LAX or vv I concentrate on getting several good nights sleep in the days leading up to the flight. (If I Can.)

For the flight it's booze and water!

Before the long haul, explore the amenities of any lounge you may have access to reasonably well.

Know your flight time, plan 120 minutes at the end, take 7-8 hours for sleep and use the front end for a movie or two, along with dinner, plenty of water and a few more drinks.

All through this, drink copious amounts of water- preferably the stuff with bubbles.

At the end, be fully aware you may be tired, expect it and don't plan anything demanding.

This does generally work for me.
