Hi,

I Have a lifemiles booking SYD-ICN-LAX for later this week in J with Asiana (777/A380), but I notice there is availability direct SYD-LAX on UA840 also in J. This is a 777. Anyone have experience with this? How does it compare to J in Asiana? Is it a flat bed ? I notice UA have a few 777 configs. Which one do they send to sydney, and is it always consistent ?

Cheers

the beds are full flat - perhaps on the 'narrow' rather than 'wide' side given the 2-4-2 configuration (but pretty much the same as BA I guess).

You can google the pictures of the flat beds - they're the ones in the front and back configuration. These are used on all international long haul services, there won't be a substitution.

i would swap from Asiana in a heartbeat. UA gives you a non-stop service, shaving 10 hours off the route via ICN. Asiana's (OZ) 777s on the SYD route I don't believe even have angled lie flats... they're sort of 'not quite straight' angled lie flats. The food will be better on OZ, but not worth the extra flying time. The service may be more attentive on OZ, but again, not worth the extra flying time.

UA is essentially 'comfort' food. There'll be lots of steak, chicken, shrimp... those sorts of things with robust sauces. And of course ice cream sundaes for dessert!! IFE? I'd say UA and OZ are pretty much same same.

Overall - UA is the way to go!

Id also switch to UA- OZ isnt that great to spend an extra 10 hours! The OZ lounge in ICN was also quite disappointing

Very comfy bed I must say but that is the only redeeming feature... Service is pretty much blah, food and drinks blah, amenity kit blah.... But it is direct which is always my preferred option.

Not my fav airline by a long stretch, but I'd be another who would take the UA option. J on the 777 is 'friendly' with your neighbouring pax but not intrusively so. (I'm guessing that only centre block of 4 seats would remain for a short notice miles redemption)
Flat bed is fine, but remember to deflate the lumbar support before full recline! (uncomfortable sleep one LAX-SYD sector and only realised why when eating beakfast before descent)

No way of telling what's left on the Avianca website, but when I try to do a dummy booking on UA, it is the second last and last rows of J left, and not the window pairs. There are two of us travelling.

The seat map on UA is the most accurate. Avianca won't have any additional access to seats.
