Seeing some of the prices we are offered to pay in certain circumstances I thought it would be fun to see what the worst quotes you have received are? It can be in any category, travel, hotel, house, home, cars etc.

One of mine would be a 3 day stay at a 2-star hotel in Sydney (over New Years I give them that), normal price was $118 per night and I was quoted $34,000 for the three days  It was a few years back though, its easier to get pricing online nowadays.

Then not to get me started on the quotes for renovating our en-suite

$50 for hour's trimming the hedge under the house electricity supply. Price to cut through the wire - free. Luckily, it was the neutral. No insurance from the 'handyman', my house insurance excess $1000.

QF flight $599 on sale vs. Classic reward seat on the same metal 56,000 points + $594 'taxes'.

Got a quote from a tiler a year back... almost $18,000 to tile a 5sqm en-suite, tiles not included :D

There are ridiculous compertised quotes (like some fares, customisations or anomalies) and then there are human compiled absurd quotes like this one. What the hell?

I do quotes with work all the time yep... I have done some shockers... Reasoning for a high quote... Don't want to do the job or too many factors to where it can go wrong and it costs you money... But yep I received some crazy quotes... Repaint the shop between $500 and 5k

I think it might have been a bit what Simo (below) said... they just did not want to do the job. I can be extremely pick and want my lines on walls and floor to line up and no cheat corners,, they need to be mitred, not that aluminium-cheat things most others put up. If its going to be done, it is supposed to be done correctly from the start.

I think you are probably right, they didnt want the job.... but now the mining sector has collapsed a bit here in WA and I could see that a lot of the crazy quotes got worse with the amount some people earned. Problem is that not all work within the mining sector... I would guess that many quotes has gone down a it the last year as jobs are scarce. Its also a perfect time to pick up a second hand jet-ski or quad bike :D

How did they reason behind that $5K quote to paint the shop? Gold paint?

Not just quotes - a plumber replaced a leaking cistern thingy in my elderly mother's unit and charged over $350 for about ten minutes' work. His invoice also claimed that he'd waived the Saturday call-out fee and had given a pensioner discount so she could consider herself lucky.

I put the tiniest dent in a Volvo a couple of years ago (my first at-fault accident in over 30 years of driving) which ended up costing about $5500. The car owner hadn't even seen the dent and only noticed my note on the windscreen a couple of days later. One time when I wished I hadn't been honest. I had to pay the excess but I was staggered by the price and amazed my insurer accepted the cost. They managed to get in a respray for the entire side of the car and car rental for the owner for the week it was off the road cost something like $2500. I'm guessing he hired a Lamborghini. What a rort the panel beating business is.

Well I sent off my booking by email for my four nights at a hotel in Monterosso, Italy so that we could do some walking in Cinque Terra, and received back my confirmation the next day.

It certainly does pay to check one's booking confirmations though as this one came back in at 90,262,900 Euro

Can you spot why...

Booking a QF OneWorld award today, I pieced it all together and the taxes came to $3300. I was flying into Helsinki from London and out of Stockholm to Doha. I decided I'd add a tag from Helsinki to Stockholm. This brought the taxes to $15,600

Finally a hotel that accepts bookings up to 1,900 years!

Re: Chicken

You are clearly not Christian Grey!

LOL had to google that.

Pays to check - prices are less than half when booking direct with the hotel....special offers haven't even been loaded yet. Flex now and re-book when they start dropping like sinkers.

Re: Chicken

I wanted to add a deck to the back of my property, a few builders I knew said it'd be under $5k so when I saw an ad for a company that specialises in that sort of stuff on TV, I got them round. They wanted $14k.

Needless to say, the deck is on pause.

Yes I got it done for about $3K some years ago after being quoted $10K by a specialist company. I got the builder who did our extension to list all the materials required (wood) and I sent out 'tenders' to get the best deal (hint: it wasn't Bunnings). Then he said he'd just charge his daily rate and had it built in three days. Was a bargain.
