What is the most expensive bottle of wine that folks have purchased that became an absolute dog when first sampling it? Mine was a Jack Mann, can't remember the year but was clearly cellared too long, or not in the right circumstances. It almost had me tearing up, but it was 'only' about eighty dollars.

I have been very lucky with corked wine over the years.

It probably helps that I tend to buy less aged wine on the open market, and put down current release wines in my cellar.

My strongest "corked" memory was a lifetime ago at a restaurant with a friend. We ordered a museum bottle of something and the cork failed on extraction. Waiter got another bottle and the cork also failed. Bottle 3 - same again. I think it was just a poor quality cork. Although the wine had aging potential, the cork limited it.

The restaurant were fabulous. After 3 bottles corked (tasted clearly oxidized, and the cork failed on extraction of all 3 bottles), they comped us a bottle of something else (younger). We paid for the next bottle of said wine. Overall the service was great and the food was yummy.

The extra bottle "comp" was above and beyond, and the quality of their food and service has led me to keep coming back. Collectively my friend and I have since dined there many times.

Too add to that, a couple of bottles I have put down have been "close" (e.g. drink straight away as they turn in the glass / carafe).

I don't think I've opened anything "long gone" at home.

The risk for me now, is I have too much wine at home, and not enough time to drink, so I need to give some away, or have a big wine-reduction party.

We've had one that turned quickly; we learned for the second bottle that you dont decant, just drink fast.

What was it?

You guys tend to drink most things quite young.

Brown Brothers Patricia Shiraz. It was a "cellar release" from the winery, probably because it was nearing its drink-by date.

We like our wine on the younger end, max out around 8 years old. I find after that things tend to taste like barrel to me.

I must say I do like most of my wines in the 5-8year mark. Almost certainly, they will be worth drinking and certainly not past it. It also depends on the coin invested as DrR only starts looking at age 10. However, it does remain to be seen with stelvin closures and the many dozen purchases from the Fo how all these will taste undoubtedly after 8 years. I may have penegals' issues with excess inventory and eventually the neighbours will really love me.

The problem with having too many "cellar wines" is you run out of quaffers. Then you stock up on those and end up with a house full of wine :D

The Patricia was under cork and may have been part of the problem...

That's exactly what happened to me. Got left with too many expensive* wines and almost no every day drops so started buying more cheap stuff until my storage room got filled with boxes and now I need to buy more fridges :p

*expensive for me is >$50 but I know some here drink well and above this price range on daily basis ;)
