Does anyone know, when a KF redemption booking is changed cancelled, do the award seats that had originally been booked automatically become available for redemption again?

Reason I'm asking is: I have MEL-SIN-FRA award seats booked next year. I want to change plans and go MEL-SIN only on that date, but there are currently no other MEL-SIN award seats available on that day. So I'm wondering if I cancel or change my existing booking, will I be able to immediately go back in and re-book MEL-SIN on the same flight that I currently have booked?

There may be others who have waitlisted. If so they will be offered your seats.

And remember to that MEL-SIN is the first step for many other destinations.

If I were you I would call up and ask. They may let you cancel the second leg for a fee.

There's no guarantee seats will be released back - it all depends on how full the flight is, whether there may be other passengers with a waitlist (seats automatically snapped up), or even whether the seats you cancel are part of married-segment itineraries. I have recently seen SIN-MEL seats sold only as married segments for pax originating outside of SIN, so while the seats you cancel might be released back, they might not be available for a simple MEL-SIN.

It would be better to see if you could change your existing booking to cancel the onward sector to FRA rather than cancel the whole thing.

Thanks for all of the replies. I ended up changing plans again (the background is, I'm trying to piece together a trip to Europe for myself, wife and 2 kids in J, using a mixture of KF and QF points). Anyway, it turned out all I needed to do was change the date of our MEL-SIN-FRA flights, which I have now done (for free - nice benefit of KF redemption bookings - although for some reason the change wouldn't go through online, so I had to call up).

For interest, after the change was confirmed, I checked on the date that we originally booked, and there is still no redemption availability from either MEL-SIN-FRA or just MEL-SIN on that date. So either the seats went to someone on the waitlist, or just disappeared into the ether.

On a sort of related matter, after you have booked and "paid" for your award seat using your points, are there many instances of the airline taking your seats back of you?

I was thinking, for example, if a fully paying cash passenger comes along, might they cancel your booking, and give your seat to that person, and maybe bump you to another flight, or back to Y?

So in short, how "safe" are award booking once they have been confirmed?

Very, very, very safe.
