With recent experience of myself and other AFFers, I though a poll might be appropriate in gauging opinion on whether or not two single beds shoved together constitute an advertised "King" room.

Please make your selection in the poll and add further comment into the body of this thread.

Arrgh! Pet hate of mine.

MAY be acceptable if a king 'top' type mattress put over the 2 singles, but NEVER if you can detect the gap between the 2 singles.

I loathe King beds that are really zip together singles.
They are convenient for hotels but sooooo uncomfortable down the middle (and more often than not sag in the middle of each single).

I would not regard 2 single beds as a king bed but I have seen this practice at many lower class hotels.

I dont like it but it is not the end of the world as long as I am able to sleep without sinking or as has happened on some occasions I have really felt the edges of the 2 single beds together trying to sleep in the middle.

I am not a fan of two singles made up as a king, two single bases with a king mattress is OK.

What possibly could be achieved with two single bases and a king mattress?

Its quite a common config, if the hotel needs more twin rooms it's achieved with just a change of the top mattress as compared to the entire ensemble while offering the customer a crackless king experience if not a twin.

I would think the zipped king bed is for that same purpose...to unzip and create two single beds...if spare single mattresses are to be used in place of a king in order to create two singles then I see a storeroom of single mattresses. Anyway...I feel the discomfort of zipped king bed.

That saves the hotel swapping the top mattress but at your discomfort, the mantra at Salt was the first time I came across such a solution, if you have a look at many kings you will find two singles at the base.

We have this set up at home - having moved house several time over the last decades, the answer is "Portability"!

Bases are generally inflexible and one of full king size would be very hard to move through rooms, corridors and stairs. The actual mattress part of a king will generally just pliable enough to enable one to curve them through places a base that size would not go.

My preferred response would be:

  • No it does not as long as it is not noticeable if moving/lying around the middle. If noticeable then it is a sham.

Yes I agree with Serfty we have king with 2 single bases, advised when we purchased this is because one solid base would have no flexibility to move through doors etc.

I have seen many king mattresses on twin bases (that lock together) in bedding stores.

A one-piece king base can be a problem in manoeuvring in stairwells and between a hallway and a bedroom for many people, unlike the somewhat "flexible" mattress.

This may be less of a problem in a hotel than a home.

Edit: Just saw posts 12 and 13 after I had finished this post.

I agree with serfty's "option". I didn't select either in the poll due to this.

I have to confess it is very rare that I've seen a king bed actually be one bed, not two which are stuck together.

That said, if the two are stuck together well and also furnished well that you can't feel that it is two beds, I'm not too concerned. By right of the moral and law, it's likely still misleading, but tactically and practically, I'll take it.

To be honest, I rarely sleep in the middle of a huge bed or diagonally across a huge bed, so in many cases a king bed is wasted on me (or at least 50% of it). Only comes in handy when you have a "companion" ;)

That said, when you can tell by feel that it's clearly two beds, I can understand why some people are disappointed. Some of them are so bad, when you roll over to the other side of the "bed", you get an odd "falling off the bed" feeling.

I wonder if you could go to OFT or other relevant authority and bring a case about this.

Our (USA-sourced) king base quickly disassembles into half a dozen easily moved components.
I didn't know that there were monolithic king bases.

I don't really care but I have had the unfortunate experience of falling through the middle of one once.

If they are well made up and secured, and hubby is far enough away that his/my tossing and turning isn't a problem, then it doesn't matter to me.

I'm with the "it depends" answer. It's only an issue if you can feel it/with any mattress slippage. If you can zip, or use a king mattress or good topper and I cannot feel it, I don't really mind either way. Plus, most of the singles hotel use are quite large, so you may end up with more room if 2 king singles, or larger, are zipped.
