I have some flights booked for work (by travel company). My SYD-BNE segment looks a little strange..

Screen Shot 2016-02-24 at 10.01.29 PM.png

I am told the entire booking was placed with Virgin, so I can only assume Virgin have shunted me over to a QF flight?
I wonder if I'll earn VA points flying a QF segment :)

Has anyone else had this happen to them?

The TA has booked you on a QF flight for the first sector. It's nothing to do with VA, just your TA. You will not earn any points or SC to Virgin. Enter a QFF number to earn on that sector.
Having QF and VA sectors on the same itinerary often happens with TA booked flights depending on the booking engine used.

FYI the screen shot was taken from the "My Bookings" section of the VA website ... hence the confusion.
I'd have thought if the TA booked on separate airlines the QF flight would not show up on the VA site?

It's because both flights are booked in the same PNR. All the my booking screen does is query the reservation system with a PNR. For the most part we only have VA on there but because both QF and VA tickets/sectors are there it shows both.

I would be interested to see if you have one or two ticket numbers. And if it was plated with QF 081 or VA 795

I have had this happen several times before. It will be a separate ticket on QF but booked by the TA using the same GDS/booking engine. Entirely possible for bookings on an unrelated airline show up on the separate airline booking site if they have been booked together by TA.

Thanks Fiona .. this explains exactly what is going on, and thank you for teaching me something new today :)

You just need to be aware, that if VA are delayed n anyway, and you miss the the QF flight, you could be up for the cost of a new ticket. You'll have to pick up your bags and recheck them into QF as well. And if you have no QF status, no lounge access at SYD.
Bit of a pain in the cough, for the TA to book your outgoing flights like that, just to save a few bucks, if it backfires, they'll be up for a lot more

Would they? I'd imagine a travel agent would simply state that they have no control over the on-time performance of any airline and deny responsibility. Isn't that what travel insurance is for?

Yeah it is, TA wouldn't pay for it, I'd guess the company would end up paying for a new flight.

Couple of red herrings here. The QF flight is the first one not a connection, and in the event of missed flights TAs aren't responsible (except, perhaps if they book < MCT but the pax takes responsible for the bookings once accepted.)

All I would say is that enjoy the walk from one side of the terminal to the other....

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

In case of a delay no one will assist in this instance (travel insurance would work great here).

If it was all VA or all QF then they would protect you and organise everything if something was to happen.

Meanwhile if it was a partner booking such as AUH-PER-SYD with EY then VA and there was a delay due to slot times over Muscat which is common then EY would manage the rebooking on arrival in Perth to the next service, provide meal vouchers and accomodation if applicable.

All works well when it's the same company or partners but other than that it is very much at your peril.

With a 4:45 total trip duration, I reckon there will be time. If the OP had arrivals access they could choose whatever lounge at BNE they wanted. Could do all three (including VA's micro-lounge, if still open, it's been a while since I've been to BNE).
