About to leave Tuesday 1st August Mel JNB with business points upgrade requested on Syd JNB and return legs (We are booked PE). Only I booked two weeks later than hubby, but linked our flights. Just found out today that the upgrade fairy selects individually when upgrading, so he being QF gold will be selected first than hopefully me as silver. Bummer! Anyone estimate my chances? QF 63 (I have checked the seat planner on EF, currently 6 business class available with 10 blocked. Failing this, do you know if it is acceptable to the crew if we chopped and changed in the flight? shared the business class??
Thanks in anticipation

We had a similar issue on EK except it was an operational upgrade for my SG husband and even though bookings linked - nothing for me. At checkin they would not say whether I could swap for him but it would be up to the crew. But she waved her wand without telling us and I was also upgraded at the gate.

I'm not sure if it makes any difference but try to stay smiling and friendly rather than get upset.

Good luck and hope it works out for you both.

Seat maps aren't necessarily an indicator of load. What are the fare buckets showing? That will give you a better indicator of your chances.

Thanks Pushka
Def agree keep on smiling, after all, its not the airlines fault that I didnt decide to go intul two weeks after my husbands booked to go!

Showing currently J7, C7, D0, I0

But not saying any are upgrade allocations

Sharing has been done before, as a courtesy I would ask crew.

Have you selected a UG at the gate as well, that could work in your favour as well as enquire at the lounge. I presume you are Silver and +1 Gold ?

That doesn't look good for me then. Are you in a particular program where you can see wait lists?
On expert flyer I can see five vacant seats in business and 9 blocked.
Thanks

6 empty seats with 13 people on the wait list at the moment.

waitlist? What source are you getting a 'waitlist' from?

I can see from EF and other sources, that the flight is moderately loaded in Y , but close to full in J. No availability in Y+. In the lap of the gods, as usual. But unlikely for both of you to get an upgrade.

I'd suggest they have sources internally...

Update 3pm Monday. Hubby got his upgrade come through this morning, and I picked him seat 5J which I have read on here is excellent seat! Also means if we are allowed swaps, no one to disturb.

That being said, EF is showing 3 business still available, plus 5 blocked. Should I get my hopes up that all gold people will have been asked and accepted their upgrades now? I applied in April for my upgrade (as I hear the earlier you apply the better).

i work for QF

Thank you very much by the way, for responding with the info re the waitlist.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

even though some seats still showing vacant? and blocked? or do you mean the 13 waitlisted have been issued so I didn't even make the wait list? is this therefore, if they still showing vacant, I can ask at the check in counter??? nicely!!!!

Again, a vacant seat on EF doesn't mean much. It doesn't take into account those who haven't selected a seat.

Its a wonderful way to learn patience LOL. We'll just see what happens. I'm in PE and will enjoy the flight (and hope the upgrade fairy arrives on the way home 15 August QF 64

Update from Zambia! So our outward journey! Hubby got his upgrade, me not! But I enjoyed my PE seat 36k. Cosy corner with plenty of room. Crew were happy fir us to swap around if we wanted. Right to the last minute couple of seats in business were still showing (via EF) and you could see the movement as people swapped, changed, checked in. But I didn't win the lottery that time lol.
Now I'm busy checking homeward flight. Qf64 15th August JNB SYD. EF Showing 12 seats business and four blocked. That is a change from this mornings check so someone took a blocked one and vacated another. Prob the seven days out option that higher tiers get offered? Hoping PenguPenguin might be able to share info re how many waitlisted? TIA.

Up to 7 days out is Platinum One. Up to two days out is Platinum. Up to one day out for Gold and below.

If they're not willing to fill seats with upgrades 7 days out (to leave seats available for last minute bookings), or if they apply for the upgrade closer to the flight or a seat opens up (e.g. due to someone missing the flight) a P1 could still get an upgrade closer to the time. Likewise with other status levels. Being silver gives you a higher chance than Bronze. Bronze members do get successful upgrades from time to time.

Thanks mviy, hubby is gold, and got his upgrade on way over 48 hrs out. I'm silver and first time on sep bookings hence I'm lower down the chain. I'll be making sure I decide I'm going when I book his not too weeks later in future lol.
