Hello all

I would just like to share a recent experience. After having a few bad experiences I decided to swap back to QF, I had one booking with VA left and decided to call up the plat helpline to cancel it. Easy enough a $200.00 cancellation fee I am happy to pay.

Heres the catch, I've cancelled the credit card that I used to pay which is the only way they would refund the money.

I am now stuck and unable to get a refund on my booking.

Just thought I'd share my experience so no one makes the same mistake as me.

you might find your credit card is not closed as such, and the money will be sitting in there as a credit. The accounts are actually left 'open' for quite some time after you cancel them for the purpose of transactions appearing much later, both debits and credits. How long is that? I dont know, but in the era of paper transactions it was 6 months or more.

Contact the credit card provider and find out

Normally in such a case they will credit to your Travel Bank. As Haymish said it maybe possible to get the funds through the credit provider.
This is not a unique issue to Virgin Australia in terms of refunds as many companies won't refund to an alternative payment method.

Good luck with QF. I have been waiting 2 months for Qantas to refund onto a valid credit card and been told it will be refunded within 5 business days each week I contact them.

Depending on when you cancelled the credit card (maybe last year) the refund should be processed and then you should be able to get the money sent to you by check or bank transfer from the credit card issuer.

This has worked for me previously.

This would be no different if you had booked on the Rat....

If you still have a relationship with the CC provider, they will take the refund and transfer it to another account.

Otherwise, refund to Travelbank which is very flexible (unlike the credit voucher system used by the Rat).

Just an update if anyone is interested.

I was contacted by a rep who told me I received the wrong information and they CAN refund to a nominated bank account and to just get in touch with [email protected].
I sent an e-mail to them and was told they couldn't refund it while booking was live and had to cancel it and once it is in a 'travel bank' account they will refund it to nominated bank account.
I cancelled the booking and now have a 'travel bank' with my funds sitting in it, I've emailed the the accounts department every 3 days for the last 12 days and have not received a response after the initial response was sent by close of business the same day.
