Noticed at work today that we have just launched a companion fare sale with some really good prices then log in to OzBargain and see that someone has beaten me to posting the same thing on Qantas!
Anyway, here are the details:

  • Depart from Sydney, Brisbane or Melbourne
  • 10 destinations in US, Canada and Mexico available
  • Fares require 14 day advance purchase
  • Minimum of 2 adult passengers permitted
  • Mon-Thur flights are cheapest but all days available during travel period
  • Business Class travel period 10FEB14-31DEC14 (departure dates)
  • Premium Economy travel period 10FEB14-31MAR14 and 14OCT14-24NOV14 (departure dates)
Prices will vary slightly depending on days/departure cities but some examples:
Melbourne - LA $2732 per person in premium economy
Melbourne - NYC $3142 per person in premium economy
Melbourne - LA $4462 per person in business class
Melbourne - NYC $5492 per person in business class
These fares are all eligible to earn Velocity points too. For example, MEL-LAX business class earns apx. 23,800 points on a return ticket which is enough for $125 worth of gift cards (Kmart, MYER, etc.).

I don't understand - use points for gift cards?

Yea don't think any of us would do that. I have just looked at booking a PE thru to New York for two and it came in at $6116 which I think is these companion fares.

Just out of interest, looked at PER-LAX return in J for two in Nov/Dec - $9012 is the cheapest I've come up with so far, flying VA metal all the way (avoiding Delta flights!), so the companion fares seem to have been loaded on the website, although no notification from Virgin yet. Very tempting indeed, but unfortunately we can't make it back to the US until next year :( .

Mind you, this companion fare sale is a first AFAIK for VA, so fingers crossed they offer these sales again in the future!
