I personally wouldn't put a photo of an FA eating (who's clearly identifiable) on a public Internet forum.

Agree with this.

Whilst it has been discussed before, what is the reason why it is not good form?

Not that I condone either side, but curious again why it's considered poor form.


I guess some might say that the FA could lose her job for seemingly doing some sort of apparent indiscretion (i.e. picture taken in wrong context). Mind you, I'm about to go into an industry where any evidence - photographic or audio - may, can and will be used against you, out of context.
 
I often marvel at Cruiser Elites photo's of the wonderful SQ staff doing their job and appearing happy as well. I cannot ever recall reading anyone post about that being inappropriate and I'm now left wondering why photos on a public forum of airline staff doing their job is acceptable, yet photos on a public forum of airline staff failing to do their job is "poor form".


What is the poor form, is the failure to carry out their work (and many of us have experienced this with VA), the failure of the CS to repremand the staff carrying on in public like the photo depicts and the failure of VA to recognise their product and service has spiralled down a black hole of late.

I too recently publicly praised (and sent feedback to VA) about a great CS named Ben. So we can obviously complement when it's due, so why can't we criticise when that is due?

Because she's entitled to a moment to herself to eat, she should have pulled the curtain but probably didn't expect someone to publish a photo of her mid mouth full...

I think it's quite different to a photo taken of a staff member serving IN the cabin whilst on public display serving meals etc. That's how I feel on the topic.

This. Surprised that the response to my criticism was to claim I and others are too sensitive. The sensitive souls in this equation are the people actually getting upset by the FA grabbing a quick bite. I just do not see the issue at all.

Whilst I agree that VA service on short-haul domestic flights has dropped, this is barely an example. She doesn't deserve to be shamed - for all we know something went wrong that morning and she unavoidably had to skip her breakfast.

So the issue is that actually the original poster of that picture shamed her, not that her picture was necessarily taken?

Had he/she done the same "shaming" but with no picture, you would still harbour an issue?

Alternatively, if that was the only picture of her and the poster was praising her, would there still be an issue?

I think the "shaming" element bothered me because it could actually have ramifications for her career, which I don't think is entirely fair. Had she been grossly negligent or hopelessly incompetent that would be a different thing, but I still would encourage anybody to take it up with the airline and not post pics.

To further qualify - I do understand the annoyance. When you're aware service is dropping, even little things can grind your gears. I've been in the same position recently. Still would stick with the above opinion, however.

This is why I suggested that the appropriateness of her actions would largely be predicated upon the flight duration (and timing). I've been a boss for many staff for over thirty years and there is no way I could make the statement that "she's entitled to a moment to herself to eat", on the basis of what has been suggested. She is entitled to her rostered breaks and that's it. On the first flight of the day, on a 1.5 hour flight, I cannot believe she was entitled to anything of the kind. I think (personally) that the photo caught her out in failing in her job role. These job role failures have become for many VA staff, their self imposed entitlement and it should be raised as a matter of concern (IMHO).

The photo didn't shame her. The photo depicted her shaming herself and effecting her own career. The only person responsible for that ladies action is herself. If her career has been affected, so be it. Plenty of people have lost their jobs or been disciplined over photos of them doing the wrong thing, but it isn't the photo....or the person posting the photo, that's to blame for it.

As there are always 3 sides to a story, I think this is a bit presumptuous especially the last paragraph. However, how are you and the OP aware it's the FA's first flight of the day, or what she has rostered for that day?

It no more presumptuous than stating she is entitled. If she is entitled, than the photo is not a problem (except for perhaps a minor dressing down about failing to close the curtain). She could only have a problem if she was not entitled, in which case, my comments stand.

The OP asked a question without judgement either way. The question was whether she should be doing that (giving a perception to half the watching plane that she was not doing her job). The answer is clearly no, she should not.

short haul cabin crew don't get to go off into a break room for a rostered break, they are on the go all day and they don't have time to have a break during a short turnaround either. It's not like a normal job or a long haul cabin crew who would have allocated times for rest.

The judgement was pretty clear between the lines, I think the OP may have been looking for some affirmation to their gripe. Do it out of site of the pax, but without further detail it is hard to say whether she should have been doing it full stop.

Perhaps a question to ask in the FA thread?

I asked,,, the whole cabin crew were doing three sectors that day, this was the first.

When i come to do my work, sometimes totally 16 hours, im fed and ready for a full day, seldom do i get a rest or meal break in my occupation.

The only poor form i could see was this particulars FA lack of attention to detail and lack of respect to her customers.

I wonder if the video of my luggage being ripped open in the rain by rough baggage handlers would come under as much fire...

See, we are all guilty of harbouring perceptions. Companies like VA often go to extraordinary lengths to ensure perceptions (true or false) don't cause them bad press and regardless of whether that FA was within her rights, or not, I'd be fairly confident that what she did would be frowned upon by the VA hierarchy.

FWIW.....I didn't even know we have an "ask the FA" thread......I'll go searching for it!
 
Does anyone know what the current menu is for SYD-LAX and LAX-SYD in J? They seem to have a 2015 version PDF on the VA website, but I've heard that the menu has been updated to a new one. Photos would also be awesome!
