Virgin Australia Business Class - Meals, Menus & Service

The duck dish is quite an odd collection on the one plate. I would usually offer it with something sweet. The garlicky hummus is definitely not in that realm.

I would have loved it in a soy dressing with a bunch of thai herbs and seated in some witlof cups.

Agree. An odd dish. Probably the only disappointing one I’ve had on VA for a while.

Flew AKL-MEL, 4pm departure. Dinner service.

Sadly just a 737 of course but in some ways it made it a cosier flight, with much more personal service from the CSM Krisssie (Kristine). She was absolutely outstanding. Constant service, walking through with water bottles and wine bottles. Pre meal drinks offered along with items from the pantry. She happily gave me almonds and some nice vegetable crisps (Kumara I presume but not sure).

Only downside is the meal is all served in one go. So no starter, and the sweet and cheese plate are inferior to VA domestic and QF trans-Tasman. But it is still decent.

Options were lamb shanks, or a Mexican corn salad with avocado and shredded chicken (optional).

Some pax chose not to eat but Krissie offered them a slightly more substantial cheese plate.

As an aside, I love the rope which completely works in terms of stopping Y pax coming through. Krissie made mention of the bathroom upfront being only for J pax or anyone who had identified as requiring mobility assistance. I thought that was great. The crew also asked pax to refrain from reclining while the meal service was happening. I suspect this was aimed at Y pax but the guy across the aisle from me in J immediately put his seat up!

Don’t think I took any pics but will check and post if I did.

Not usually a sweet tooth and so will go the cheese. But given it is rare that a dessert ever appeals, I decided to forego the usually outstanding VA cheese plate and try the banana cake. So glad I did. It was delicious and not too heavy.

Strong headwinds so flight was quite long. Was offered cheese or anything else I wanted about an hour out. Didn’t think I’d do justice to the cheese so settled for some shortbread.

I sure waddled off this flight.

MEL-BNE 18:00 departure on a Monday night.
Offered PDB of sparkling.
Meal didn't come out for 50 minutes, no offer of a drink before the meal.
All in J had to push button to get him to come and take our finished trays away.
Then he went back in behind the curtain. Think he was well and truly distracted with something else.
Pressed the button a couple of times for the remainder of the flight to ask for a refill.
Sometimes it is very good, other times not good at all.

I had chicken on rice - was ok. +1 had some vegetarian dish - couldn't work out what it was.

That looks truly horrible. Poor you. The amount of mint on that salad would render it inedible.

It would appear the FA has clearly not passed his plating module in the VA hospitality handbook. I give him a C+ at best.

Have to agree. I’m hoping the OP gave some feedback to VA in regards to the food and the service

@dxwell I think you had the same dish as I had a couple of weeks ago for the main. It was described to me as chicken and cous cous.

To me it tasted like lamb on barley...

Despite being a short flight I can’t ever recall a bad meal or having bad service on this route.
PD bubbly served within a couple of minutes of been seated and topped up just before taxiing.
Think there must have been an upgrade as I overheard the FA’s mention that there was only meant to be 3 J pax but ended up with 5. Meal order taken within a few minutes of seatbelt sign going off and seated in 1A and 1C we had first dibs on the dinner order which was a choice of Chicken & Cashew satay sticks or some kind of salad I can’t remember. Mrs Jase and I both chose the Satay’s. Only 3 of that dish was available so the occupants behind us had to argue over who got the salad.
The meal didn’t look like much on arrival but was simply stunning in taste and I rank it right up there with MH’s famous Satays. Plenty of sauce too with the right amount of spice and the bread roll was eagerly used to mop up the remaining sauce. Washed down with a couple of Sauvignon Blanc’s and before we knew we were descending into MEL.
PB strictly enforced in ADL and onboard the use of the forward lavatory was policed well.
Only negative of the flight was the walk across the tarmac in MEL (no biggie) and our luggage being almost the last off the belt.
