Hi all. Would love some help and advice!
I'm currently in Canada and while here I've stupidly managed to put my passport through the wash. So I applied for and received an emergency passport.

I'm flying back to Australia from Montreal. However I have to go through the us. So my flight leg is Montreal - Detroit - lax - Brisbane. As it's an emergency passport I am unable to get an ESTA. I do however have a British passport. So I've applied for an and received an ESTA for that.

I tried to check in online for my flight using my British passport and it said I was unable to check in as I didn't have authorization for my final destination. I've spoken to all possible consulates who have all just fobbed me off.

Has anyone ever been in a similar situation or have any advice?

Are any of your original passport details legible, ie PP number, photo page etc etc or is it completely destroyed

The passport number is still legible however the photo is not. Also when the emergency passport was issued that one had to be cancelled

They said to present to the airport To discuss it. But I very much got the vibe she just didn't have an answer

Don't stress too much about it, it wont be the first time something like this has happened. You are lucky in a way that you have your old PP, all be it destroyed and cancelled, you still have it to be produced.

If you have exhausted all other avenues, I would present to the airport hours early and just go through the motions and expect a run around. Make sure you have your emergency PP, your original PP and a copy of your original ESTA and your ESTA for the British PP.

Wishing you the best of luck

I assume the emergency passport is Australian.
Why did you get an emergency passport instead of a new normal passport? They can issue new passports at the DC embassy.

You'll have to check in at the airport. Show the emergency passport as right to enter AU, use the UK passport for US transit.

It happened while I was in Canada and was all the high consulate here would offer me. So I should be showing my Australian passport at check in. My British passport to clear Canada?

Once at the airport they can check that you have the right to enter Australia and get clearance so shouldn't be a problem. as eric2011 says just get the airport well early and expect lots of questions. Stay calm at all times

as others have indicated, this is not something to be too concerned about. The only thing that's happened is that you can't check in online, and the reason is pretty straight forward... you don't have a passport to facilitate that given the routing.

That doesn't have any bearing on what will happen at the airport at the check in counter. You have a valid ESTA and passport for the USA (your British one) and you can show the emergency Aussie passport as required for proof of entry to Australia. The checkin staff will do the rest. There's absolutely no problem for an Aussie entering and leaving the USA on a British passport, but then using an Aussie passport once back in Australia.

If it was me would get to the airport with heaps of time and be prepared to answer questions and make sure you have a good attitude as that will play a big part as well.
