An item in the ABC & BBC news services. Venice to charge tourist entry fee & Venice to charge tourists for historic city's upkeep

The ABC one indicated that overnight visitors would not be affected because they already pay a "stay" fee but the BBC is more uncertain. To be honest I quite understand why this is being introduced. It must be hugely expensive to maintain the place. Of course we can complain about endemic corruption and political chaos in Italy but if handled properly this could help to preserve Venice.

Best of luck with that then....

They are going to have to improve their entry process at the airport then. Over 90 minutes just to get to the counter last year.

...if handled properly...

Yes, I deliberately used those words because of what I had previously read about the handling of the Venice lagoon flood gates project - "An initial budget of €1.5 billion ($1.67 billion) has ballooned to a total cost of €5.5 billion ($6.15 billion). This rise was made harder to stomach when it was revealed in 2014 that at least €20 million ($22.4 million) had been skimmed off the budget in the form of kickbacks, leading to the arrest of Venice’s mayor."

And with the state of the current Italian Government any useful central supervision would be very doubtful

Day tripper tax, seems fair enough to me. Only 1/5 of 30 million stay at least one night ..... must be a cruise thing?

Must be lovely living in a cruise port

just make the place a minimum 2-3 night stay. Then what you do with the CICO passengers I don’t know.

The tourist tax in Venice has been in place for decades and I’m not talking official taxes...The whole joint is corrupt. They need an overhaul but look what happened when Macron tried in FR.

I’ve been once - stayed for 4 nights - should have stayed 2, no compulsion to go back.
