My wife and I are planning a trip next April/may with our (soon to be) newborn son.

Hoping to go J the whole way, and trying to figure out the best strategy to do so. Would have bought those cheap J tickets last week, but the dates unfortunately didn't work out (my pregnant wife would have killed me if I suggested it - being heavily pregnant and flying is no fun no matter if it's Y or F)

We have about 340k velocity, and 80k Amex mr. We can probably earn another 50-100k before then, but then would be leaving it pretty late to book. Already have the current Amex and nab promos, so can't use those cc bonus offers.

WP with velocity, so would prefer to book VA or partners for lounge access.

We want to go BNE, LAX, Washington, D.C. , LHR then BNE (with a stopover to break up the trip). Pretty flexible aside from that eg weird routing or additional legs.

Any suggestions? SQ have a RTW business ticket, but it's 240k pp and the velocity exchange rate won't cover it

Happy to pay for PE and upgrade to J on points for legs, then outright redemption for other legs, but do we have enough points? Also, PE to LAX seems quite high at about $1500 one way. I seem to remember this used to be $1500 return in PE (when Y was $1000 return). Bne lax seems pretty bad for upgrade availability. And east coast US -> LHR seems to be about 100k points each one way, which would chew up a lot.

Should I just try and string together as many partner award legs as possible and then pay for the rest?? Or am I missing a strategy somewhere?

staying with VA and partners on award seats

To do this in J for 2 x pax, you would need a massive amount of points, aside from the availability issue.

Considering BNE - LAX you would need nearly 200,000 points one way.

Even paying cash for LAX to IAD and IAD - LHR might be an option....I would try and get your long haul BNE - LAX and / or LHR to BNE with reward seats. This would still require at least the +/- 400,000 points mark.

I think your main problem will be availability.

I could buy a Freedom Y fare bne - lax and then upgrade for 45k points pp.

Then lhr - Auh - bne would be 140k pp in Etihad (plus taxes), or we could go with SQ for about the same (lower taxes)

That would be about 370k points total. So it would mean we would have to pay for Y or pay for J for LAX -> IAD and IAD -> LHR

(Assuming I can find availability that is)

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.
