Gotta love how Velocity values points. Called yesterday to request a points upgrade MEL>PER but I was 7000 points short. No problem, I can buy the points for $233.

Opted not to and instead requested an Economy X seat. No problem, that'll be $59....or 7000 points.

Profit has to come from somewhere :)

QF charge AUD245 for 7000 top up points so AUD233 on VFF is 'better value' .....

Did you check any other Airline in the world and see what they charge to buy points?

you might likely find that its pretty much par for the course, they are all expensive.

I have no doubt most airlines would have charge similarly. My point is more the disparity between what they charge for points, and what they give you back for the same number of points.

7000 points is a pittance - a few ebay purchases gives that.

If you cannot figure out how to maintain a positive points balance - many of us have 7 figure totals, don't bewail buying them last minute which of COUSE is super expensive comparatively.

No-one forced you to upgrade!

That's pretty vague...do you have any good examples other than spending thousands?

Anyway...yes points are often best used only when value suits you....not them.

"Pretty Vague"? What is vague about it?

We bought 2 x new ASUS laptops last month via ebay, at cheapest price around, during a 20% off sale, bought after logging in to ebay via Velocity link, funded it via Amex on paypal checkout, and bingo 7000 Virgin miles when I transfer the Amex points over during one of the regular Amex to Virgin transfer bonus deals. One transaction = 7000 Velocity miles.

Not vague now you have given details of all the different circumstances and deals you got. But quite a large spend which is more than $233 so i miss your point. Anyway......back on topic.

A bit harsh there stampy. Lets encourage discussions, particularly from the newbies. I though it was interesting.

For the record, my SWMBO does indeed force me to upgrade. I'm sure others do too.

Speaking of VA points value, it is definitely true that Velocity is trying hard to transform into a worthless programme devoid of consumer appeal.

Unlike some, we don't fly much so only have 50,000 points - what to do with them? My travel agent suggested check out the petrol option (REDEEM VELOCITY POINTS For flights and upgrades, fuel, hotel stays or products and gift vouchers. and scroll down) . My very rough calculations suggest the following which might help casual flyers.

Flight, SYD to OOL : Fare is $143.65 plus $35.35 taxes, etc. Points is, I think, 7,800
Alternatively, BP petrol option: $20 = 3333 points so a flight equals a bit over $40 of petrol and I can get that easily, any time, no waiting.

Whats best is what works for you but if you don't fly much then even though BP petrol is more expensive than Woolies, I'd sooner have $20 or more off each tank than 4c per litre discount.

The more that some people spend their points on things like toasters and and fuel discounts make means all the more business class flights for me.

Those points transfer to ~37,000 Krisflyer miles. Another ~21,000 KrisFlyer miles and theres a return in economy to SE Asia. Taxes are genuine taxes only.

Pay for another return and have a holiday in a resort somewhere.

There's a devaluation to/from KrisFlyer coming in the new year. I have ~150,000 Velocity points + 70,000 Flybuys points which are not quite enough for 3 one-ways in business to SE Asia.

So many possibilities.

VA wanted 6000 VFF points for $35.15 of taxes on a CBR-ADL one way reward booked today. Scoundrels.
