Hi guys,

I've never really bothered with the global wallet part of my velocity card but I soon need to pay for a few flights and noticed that they now pay out 2 points per $1 on international transactions. I'd be paying for domestic flights within South Africa and then business tickets from Johannesburg to Sydney through Etihad and whilst they're all quoted in ZAR I'd still be making this purchase whilst still in Australia. Would I still be entitled to the 2 points even though I'm making the purchase locally but in a foreign currency?

yes. doesn`t matter where you are based as long as it is in a currency other than your home one. In some rare cases even A$ purchases are considered as a foreign currency purchase.!

Could someone please clarify if this is correct?

It's not what the terms say:
"1. Velocity Points earn applies to Qualifying Purchases paid with the Global Wallet® card. Members will earn 2 Velocity Points per AUD $1 (in the equivalent international currency) for Qualifying Purchases from merchants located outside of Australia and 1 Velocity Point per AUD $3 for Qualifying Purchases from merchants located in Australia on the Global Wallet®. Qualifying Purchases exclude ATM withdrawals, quasi cash transactions (e.g., money orders, travellers' cheques and foreign currencies in cash), payments made to the Australian Taxation Office or other national or local Australian tax authorities, fees and charges, account adjustments, reversed transactions, gambling transactions and business transactions. See the Product Disclosure Statement for more information on Qualifying Purchases."

The key point above is where the merchant is located, i.e. the transaction not is processed, not the currency, nor where the buyer is located.

If the transaction is in ZAR I'd be surprised if it is processed here. Even if the business is here they may still process the transaction offshore.

That said, I wouldn't be inclined to risk it myself
