I am a velocity gold member and am taking a trip in October to Honolulu with my family. I want to book with Hawaiian Airlines, the flights with them are looking today at being $2600 if I book via Virgin website they are $3600 which is insane.
Hawaiian Airlines don't show me the fare class before booking so I think I'll have to get Hawaiian Miles (I am a member) is there anyway of transferring these points over to Velocity once earned?
I see on Velocity website that certain fare classes don't attract points/status with other airlines, so I'm thinking that if I book the HA flight and it's on a class that I can't earn Velocity points on then this is the only way of getting my points (by transferring them) but am I right that this isn't possible? I can't see anywhere online that you can transfer HA points over to Velocity.
It's a shame because I was hoping to earn Status credits and get the points, we don't travel a lot so this would have helped us keep gold for another year. But i'm not downing $1000 extra to book via Virgin just to get points and status credits.
Can anyone help and let me know what I should do?
If I don't get any points via HA I might as well fly with Jetstar who are even cheaper (even after paying for the "Plus" bundle)

You can't transfer Hawaiian miles to Velocity.

If you want to earn Velocity points & status credits, I believe you can still earn them if you book via Hawaiian Airlines (i.e. under the HA flight number), as long as you've booked into an eligible fare class. I suggest you investigate further what the fare class Hawaiian is offering and compare it to the fare classes shown on the Velocity website as earning: https://www.velocityfrequentflyer.com/content/Earn/Airlines/PointsEarn/#hawaiianairlines

If you can't work out the fare class, post the flights/dates etc. you're looking at and I'll see if I can work it out.

Thankyou. I booked because it was just too expensive to go thru Virgin (over $1000 for same flight) which is absurd!
There is NO WAY to find out what fare code you're under until AFTER you've booked I've confirmed this with HA which is also ABSURD!! So I now have 3 tickets with fare class Z which DO NOT get points via Velocity. I am super pissed. So far HA have not been at all helpful. I'm quite annoyed that I can't get any points with a partner airline. I wish we never chose Hawaii as our next holiday. So i'll just hope that the 2 domestic flights we need to all take by June next year can keep me in Gold (doubtful)

There are ways to work out the fare class before booking, even if it doesn't show on the Hawaiian website.

If you're not happy with the flights and want to try again with a new booking, Hawaiian does have a 24 hour cancellation policy. You can cancel free of charge for a full refund by calling Hawaiian within 24 hours of making the booking.

Thankyou but we need the flights so will keep them.
I asked HA and they said to check terms and conditions and fare type would be listed, it wasn't and when I did a google search many other people also said they didn't get the fare type until after they booked.
Seems like a bit of a scam to me, anyway I've also read of people applying via velocity after flying HA to claim missing points and it was accepted even on fare classes that were ineligible, so who knows I'll wait and see what happens.
It's a shame because we always fly virgin and can't understand why the same flight via virgin is $1000 more

One question my fate class is Z but when I look up HA fare classes this is what it says which I find odd as this flight is HA flight and not codeshare.
Economy codeshare (flight operated by partner airline): Z

Can you share your flight numbers? It is very strange that you have booked into 'Z' class. This is not a normal fare class on HA that I am aware of. It doesn't even earn HA miles, and for $2600, that is extremely strange. Did you book directly with HA?

Personally I would refund these tickets in the 24h window and investigate what is going on. It's likely for a very small amount more you can book a fare class that you can earn VA points and SC on.

Where an airline will not publish the fare class during the booking process (I am looking at you QF), I use Expedia to find out what the fare class will most likely be. Amex travel is also pretty good.

The dummy SYD-HNL booking below shows fare class Z -

Flight numbers are
SYD-HNL HA452
HNL-SYD HA451
I need to clarify that $2600 was for 3 tickets, 2 Adults and 1 child, sorry about that.

I emailed HA and told them to add my Velocity numbers to my booking and got a reply back saying "we've already added your velocity numbers" how could they have possibly known them? I'm finding this airline very strange.

Pleb, excellent tip about Expedia, thankyou.

You may need to get them to manually add your Velocity numbers when you check in for the flight.

I would seriously consider the cancel & rebook method. It's probably only slightly more to book into an earning fare class!

They told me they “already added them” I’m not sure how they could have possibly known my velocity numbers
I’ll try to cal in my lunch break today and see how much extra it would be to change the fare class to an eligible one

Ok I called in my mid morning break and it will cost around $300 to change it to an L class which from the looks of it DOES allow velocity points
Should I change it??
Are the points worth $300 ?

Is that a total cost of $300 to change all the tickets to L class? If so, I would do it.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

The big benefit here would be the family pooled SC....

If you sent them your velocity numbers, and they replied back and said 'we've already added them', then that just means they added them before they sent the reply. You are reading way too much into their grammar.

Yes $300 total
I’m going to change it we use family looking so it does work out better

So I called to make the change and they said they can’t unless I change something about the booking so I have to adjust my dates.
They did say they can do a complete refund and I’d have to rebook but the refund will take 7 days which is too annoying to deal with.
So I’ll add or deduct a day on the end of the trip
Hopefully it’s painless the last call took over 30 mins to find out I wasn’t able to change fare class and pay difference unless making a change.

Just make sure you make the change or cancel within 24 hours of making the booking - otherwise they'll probably ask for a change fee as well!

OK am currently on hold, got different person again and told something different again. So total is $344 and seems he can do it without me needing to change any dates etc.
New Fare Class will be "L" which does allow me Velocity points and status, because we use family pooling I'll be able to keep the Gold status for another year - yay.
Hopefully I get off hold soon and all is done!!

As much as I love organising travel, you can’t help but love a good travel agent who generally can get earning fares and classes sorted out with minimum fuss.

I’ve reverted to an agent for my last few trips and happily fly as QF WP.

All the same, good outcome for you!!! :)
