Velocity Accounts being suspended for investigation

So today, I received the following letter as appended below

Problem is, I have not flown / used Velocity as far as I can remember for the longest time (i.e. no recent activity) , nor transferred points in / out as far as I can remember as well. Have a grand total of zero points in the account (maybe some expired) and zero SC obviously. Can't even remember the last time I stepped into a Virgin plane!

So why would I receive this letter? And what unusual activity can there be?
Do they suspend accounts that are "dormant"? Maybe my account was hacked but AFAIK, my email address is still the same and I wasn't informed of any transactions on my account. Strange. But no real loss.

This letter is to notify you that Velocity Rewards Pty Ltd (Velocity or us or our or we) has detected unusual
activity in relation to the Account and has suspended the Account effective as at 5 November 2018.
We believe that the activity may amount to a breach of the Velocity Frequent Flyer Terms and Conditions
(Membership Terms) and have suspended the Account while the matter is investigated in accordance with
section 9.1 of the Membership Terms.
We are unable to provide further information at this time and will inform you of the outcome of our
investigation within 30 days.

Can this happen if someone attempted a fraudulent transfer *to* your account? You maybe unaware they were doing this or your account number was entered incorrectly on their end?

Note: I have no knowledge of the VA points transfer facility.

Maybe thats the issue, its not that you need to remember becuase you havent used it, so just log into the velocity account and see what the recent activity is.
 
My wife and I just received the letter at the bottom of this email.

I am a small little red, but my wife is gold with both VA and QFF, and normally flies VA for business each week.

To say my wife is a little anxious is an understatement.

We tried calling all the usual numbers, but it won't accept her VA number when we punch it in, and when we get through to the generic service desk, they are not helpful at all.

We have sent a reply, but have no idea what else we should do. Their 9.1 clause doesn't exactly tell us what they think we have done.

Has anyone else experienced this?

We don't do anything dodgy with our points and never have, we have the standard family setup:

  • Family pooling from my account to hers (Married, same address, same last name)
  • No activity on 5th November as suggested, last activity was 1st November
  • Last activity on 1st November was some from ICONIC/eBAY & Flybuys transfers (some to my account and some went to hers)
  • Last inter-airline transfer was to Singapore Airlines in Feb.
Anyone else's wisdom on this matter would be great!

i've logged in an as far as i can tell there is no activity (its hard to see because it greys out and says I have logged into a suspended account).

will be interesting to see what happens after 30 days
 
Wow, two similar emails for no discernable reason. Programming error is my guess.
 
haha maybe its an IT glitch.
like how they were giving out / informing people of free gold many years back!

That was laughed off as a Friday the 13th glitch.

It’s not unheard of VA to investigate and suspend accounts. I know of a couple of members on here that were investigated due to what VA thought was fraudulent use of family pooling from memory.
 
You’ll get a second letter explaining the alleged offences to your account in the next day or two..
 
I have had two (2) separate emails over the past 24 hours for my Apple account and my Hilton account. Both say more or less the same thing and look legit. On closer inspection, the link contained in the emails point to a 3rd party web site. I am now convinced they were phishing emails.

Sounds like you have already bit the bait and logged in to check things. If I were you, I would change my Velocity password immediately. Hopefully you are not using the same password elsewhere.
 
You should receive a second email in a day or two outlining the offences against your account that you committed..

ah no there's no bait / link in the email. i logged in independent of the third party email.

I’m a Sys Admin by trade, and can confirm they are not phishing emails.

This just happened to myself and my wife. They are legit.

ah i did not realise! good luck with your case.

I'm not fussed because i have zero activity on this since a long time but will be curious to see what they flagged. maybe just a scam to get me to log into my velocity account again after a long time!
 
There’s a thread on the ozbargain travel forum started on 5 November.
OP stated his account is suspended, mentions that points were sold
by same to someone on ozbargain. Sounds like Velocity suspended
quite a few accounts on the same date and stuffed up a few of their
internal investigations.
