Saw this yesterday - the new sample menu for long haul SYD-LAX J

I must say, I am slightly underwhelmed. The once-impressive French vintage champagne no longer fares a mention. Seems it has been replaced by an Australian sparkling. And the hearty robust red meat & vegetable options I remember, have given way to geriatric stews that promise a Bad Grandpa scene in the loo for sure. Seriously - mac & cheese for Business Class?

>Insert sad face here<

That menu actually looks good for me personally but can understand how it is underwhelming for others

You must be mistaken- this must be the new sample menu for Y class.

If not Y , then things must really be dire, or the village idiot is making the decisions...

Seems to be a bit 'EY' like in trying to win a race to be the least attractive flying option after being one of the best..

Damn none of those choices are appealing to me. And i could swear last time i was drinking chivas, now it's johnny red?!

That is really disappointing. :(

Casseroles by any other name.

For me it was the best Transpacific J fare bar none.

I guess the bean counters decided they had no competition.

I like mac & cheese, had it for lunch today

I dont drink booze so dont mind the menu.

I like mac and cheese too :). I'd be quite happy with that menu - I don't drink alcohol either, so that side of things doesn't worry me at all.

Their load factors would suggest otherwise :)

The menu seems ok for the food but certainly no wow factor. Drinks on the other hand are definitely a step down :-/

Good pub fare on the menu there! I would eat it, but it seems very PE rather than J fare.
Very disappointed in the whisky selection - JW Red works as a mixer, but I would feel rather desperate drinking it on its own.

Interesting to read about the wines, how some are selected based on their tasting at altitude rather than at sea level.
The sparking rating (3.5): Bridgewater Mill Adelaide Hills Chardonnay Pinot Noir | Wine Info
The first sav blanc (4.1 - a very good score): Eddystone Point Sauvignon Blanc | Wine Info
The second sav blanc (3.6): Amberley Secret Lane Sauvignon Blanc | Wine Info
The chardonnay (2.5 - panned): Grant Burge Vine View Chardonnay | Wine Info
(and then I lost interest, you get the score average)
I am fully supportive of VA using Aus wines (even though there are NZ wines on the menu), but you would think they would choose better from our world-class Aus wine selection.

There are wines there that are served to plebs in the Lounge. Very poor indeed.

Nothing to do with load factors.

VA have the best transpacific business seat and until this menu the best food

You missed the point but it was a joke anyway :)

Reading the menu I agree it looks like cost saving initiative that’s for certain.

Yes im sure most people do too. Although maybe more so as a side dish or an accompaniment rather than a main course.

More objectively though, the alcohol selection has taken a big step down :(

What a bizarre wine list. Three whites on offer, yet they double on the SB. Even more bizarre, Chardonnay from the Barossa?!? Come on. Go a Coal River Chardy instead and throw in a Riesling.

Very disappointing indeed. It still seems Luke Mangan inspired to me though.

Seems it’s now a race to the bottom to beat AA/United at their own game of gruel and slop.

Let’s hope ‘The House’ in MEL/SYD doesn’t gut it’s food and drinks too.

I didn’t think Virgin had anything to do with the running of the House?
