Hi

I want to use my QF points for a one flight, Singapore to Sydney in early December 2019. I have enough for business class but just looking at availability of seats, it seems that on all QF flights out of Singapore at the end of November 2019, only Economy is available.

I did see a BA flight where I could use my QF points for a Business Class seat, and was wondering what BA is like these days. Last time I flew with them I was not impressed at all.

I definitely want a non stop flight and do not want to come back home Singapore to HK and then onto Sydney.

Any thoughts? Thanks

BA J is not the best......although I prefer it over J seat on the QF A380......providing I can snag 16A or 16K - rear facing, bulkhead seats. The bed on BA is one of my favourites and I don't need Google to understand the menu. If it was a choice between J on QF's A330 or J on BA's 777 I would go for QF.

Thanks for that, I will have to wait a week to see what's available but I doubt I'll be able to get a FF point "reward" seat in Premium Economy or Bus o QF ... they have cheap economy seats available but I find them too uncomfortable for a longer flight.

What don't you like about BA ? Food ? service ?

BA pack a lot of seats into J, it feels very cramped and is also very dated. Aisle seats are not very private and window seats do not have direct aisle access.

I prefer the BA food offering to QF, but many here don't - it is simple compared to QF. A lot of people complain about service but it has been pretty good for me. (I'm a 9000 TP a year GGL so the BA regulars would argue that it is likely I get special treatment.)

The seat is usually the main complaint in a few respects. There is very little storage, which quickly becomes irritating on a long flight. Then there is the issue of the front-rear facing seat plan where you can be facing the person sitting next to you, this is mitigated by a privacy divider but is still uncomfortable. Finally if you're in a window seat you have decent privacy but the seat is narrow and there's not much elbow room, if you have an aisle seat it can be best described as sitting on a park bench as there's absolutely no privacy.

I've been ok with BA J food and the wine is decent. Service is up and down but almost every airline is like that.

Having just had a look see on the QF website, with the choice of Dec 2019 greyed out, and it being peak season, I would say that QF is wanting to make top $ from only selling J seats, and not putting them into the classic award "basket".
If you choose to go and buy a seat, I would expect that there would be those available.
Never seen a whole month greyed out though, must admit.
If you really must fly "home", how about buying a J*/Death* J, yes, it would be bad/horrid/ho hum, but at the least it would get you to MEL where you can do a domestic flight to SYD.

Hi Dougo,

I fly MEL-SIN frequently in Y (work pays) and used to commonly request upgrades to J on the return leg so slightly different situation, I know, but still relevant experience I think. It is such a short (overnight) flight that I decided IMHO it really isn't worth the points required (or the $ if you're paying) to get into J. I would get maybe 4 hours sleep in J instead of 3 hours in Y. I would eat and drink (rather too well) in the SIN QF lounge so wouldn't eat at all on the plane. Still get off the plane feeling pretty drained and feel like crashing on the couch by early afternoon either way. I understand that YMMV, and you didn't mention your QF status/access to the SIN QF or other lounge etc, but hope this feedback helps.
Cheers, Mike

December 2019 for QF awards will certainly be greyed out, because they only release seats 353 days out - which is currently 30 November 2019.

Thanks Mike.
Unfortunately no status - we only do one big trip a year and an occasional domestic flight. We thought we may be able to use our points to upgrade from PE to Business for our flight to London but they don't want our points, just our $.

When I have points that will pay for Y class, it's annoying that I can't use them on anything other than cattle class.

Thanks everyone else for your comment ... the J*/Death* option is an idea but not sure I want to go down that path as the few flights I've done with them have been less than stellar.

If you have no status with QF I would guess you will have no chance of a QF premium award in December.Really only option for a QF caward on that sector would be BA.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Its very easy to get a FF ticket via Krisflyer SQ even without status
You have maybe 6-8 months to get about 55-60K in Krisflyer points for 1xJ SQ FF ticket. This is because availability is usually good up to a few months out

(Sorry I know this is about QF FF points but as you can see its very difficult)

Thanks everyone for your advice and assistance ... I may end up going Economy (sigh) and save my points for domestic flights.
