Hi gang, I have my first point flight from ADE to Langkawi via Singapore, in July with wife and son, all very exited. Now I have been trying to work out the best and best value flight back to ADE. After 5 days in Langkawi I plan to fly to Singapore on the 14 th of July for 6 days there and then fly home to ADE on the 20th. The only non stop flight available is with SQ, at around $1100 which is a bit steep, looking at many options to get home and going a bit crazy in the process, I looked at a multi stop flight with SQ from Langkawi to Singapore to Adelaide, the price was $850 and I get Langkawi to Singapore, why is this cheaper?????

One of the problems with SQ (and many other airlines) is that one way flights are extremely expensive, as you are forced to pay for a full fare economy ticket. For this reason, it often doesn't make sense to book one way on points and then back on a one-way cash fare, as the total cost will often be more than just buying a cash fare for the return trip. As an example, SQ have return fares from ADL-LGK for as little as $1,330 in July. If you have to pay $1,100 one way, plus the cash component of your award ticket on the way out (presumably a couple of hundred $?), it means you're not really saving anything by using points. IMHO, points only make sense if you can get there and back on points. Might be worth looking into award bookings round trip for 1 or 2 of you and then cash round trip for the other 1/2. That's what I've always done if I have been unable to get award tickets for all 4 in my family.

Just on the "why cheaper" question....

...while it may be counter intuitive ..number of flights/distance flown are often NOT hugely important factors in flight pricing... there are MANY factors involved...such as competition against non stop flight offerings by other airlines etc
