I've been a member on here for a few years now and it's always great to read the many posts on how to capitalise and maximise your points.

A few months ago I was talking to my good friend Dave Drury about my most recent credit card sign-ups and my stockpile of points when he told me about a movement he was starting to provide sleeping bags to the homeless using donated frequent flyer points.

Points for Purpose is a very simple idea that can, and is, making a huge difference to those in need. Working with numerous charities, Dave has established a movement that allows you to "donate" your unused points to buy a sleeping bag for someone who desperately needs it. Right now you can use your Qantas, Flybuys and Virgin points to buy a "zero-degree sleeping bag" which will go directly to the people most in need.

In October 2016, SBS national news ran a story on Points for Purpose (watch it at pointsforpurpose.org) which has helped drive awareness and momentum. In just 4 months, more than 1.2 million points have been used to provide more than 4,000 warm nights sleep to people living on and around the streets of Sydney.

As we’re giving and making such a worthwhile difference, it’s important to bear in mind just how tough these people are doing it. Sadly, just two weeks ago, homeless man Paul Antaw (who accompanied Dave in the SBS news story), was stabbed to death in Woolloomooloo.

Inspired by this, Dave and a growing team of advocates are doing all they can to ensure more people on our streets are helped, and I really believe he’s doing an amazing job!

If you have spare points, do as I did and make a direct difference today. Every 12,480 points you use will change the life of a human on our streets.

Both my husband and I are going to have a small pool of QF points by the end of March that might be just enough to buy a toaster but not much else (we rarely fly Oneworld).

I'll be coming back to this thread/link - thanks for posting. Im surprised so few points could actually buy something worth while.

Unfortunately it's well known that spending your points at the FF stores is one of the worst conversion rates for using points. I suppose at least with this new initiative the points outlay is quite small (e.g less than a return flight to Melbourne on points) and you know your purchase is doing some good and helping keep the homeless warmer and dryer at night time.

Thanks for considering donating!

Thanks for this. What a great idea. The thought of so many young people on the streets is heartbreaking. When I have enough (should be in next couple of weeks) I will donate.

:D Thanks for getting on-board Orca! Dave saw your reply last night and called me to express his excitement at getting some coverage on this forum and your quick response.

Hi big_Red. No probs at all, the pleasure is mine. I've just lodged an order via qantas store and 2 bags are on their way to Dave. Estimated delivery date of 13/02. Cheers

Fantastic! Thanks for choosing to make a direct difference to people on our street Orca.
Dave has said if you want to check out the Facebook page it is: https://www.facebook.com/pointsforpurpose/. Dave posts thank you messages there to everyone who donates, but he's also asked me to pass on the below thank you image.

Thanks to all who have donated currently! Dave wanted to provide an update on things to let you know how Points for Purpose (pointsforpurpose.org) is going.

On March 19, Points for Purpose is launching a music video called ‘How do you sleep?'. They are doing this to raise awareness for the plight of homelessness and to drive more people to use their loyalty points for purpose.

In preparation for the release, they’ve set up a support page at http://thndr.me/mua1jZ where you can sign up through your social media account and what that will mean is that on March 19th, everyone who has supported them and signed up will have a post automatically shared on their timeline regarding the music video launch. It’s called a “thunderclap” and it can generate enormous impact - the more shares they get, the bigger the difference we can all make to helping homelessness.

Points for Purpose currently have more than 160 people supporting this (with a reach of 72,468 people!) which is exciting, but Dave would love to get many more involved. Please help support this cause and do as I did and click http://thndr.me/mua1jZ to help as many people as possible to not only see the video, but to also see just what amazing work Points for Purpose is doing to help the homeless.

Thanks to those who have already generously donated their hard earnt points and to those that are thinking about it.

I bought one last night and it's coming Dave's way.

I put my mobile number in the purchase but I don't know whether that will appear on the invoice. The invoice number ends in 241.

Thanks Danger!

Hopefully you were able to make use of the current discount at the Qantas Store. Qantas have a BIG sale on the Points for Purpose sleeping bag that is gifted to the homeless. It's normally 12,400 points, but currently it's just 9,910 points!

For any other members wanting to make a direct difference to people in need by using your points, please head to pointsforpurpose.org now and follow the simple 3 step instructions.

Thanks for being the difference.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Dave will send you a thankyou text on your mobile. (He did me anyway)

I purchased another way today and have sent it Dave's way.

When I purchased the first one earlier this month is was 9910 points, reduced from the full price of 12,400. Now the store has an up to 50% off sale on selected Caribee products (the brand of the sleeping bag). With that the full price is 23,260! With the 50% discount it's 11,630.

Is this an example of misleading advertising?

As promised, scrounged up enough QF points for 2 bags today.

Much better than buying a toaster :)
