USA Screening by the TSA

That's correct. I now recall hearing that whilst in the queue.

Link here to info on screening. The sub-menu provides additional info on liquids, et al.

Shoes definitely must come off. Not negotiable.

Screening at land borders is minimal.

IME over many domestic sectors they do not require LAGs to be removed and screened separately even in the non-TSA pre check lines.

Laptop/tablet forgotten to be removed few times but not picked on.

I prefer thorough checks over risks of carelessness by security.

I confused the hell out of one guy once, he said tablet could stay in bag, laptop had to be removed. I said I had a tablet with attached keyboard, therefore does that classify under laptop or tablet? He sort of shrugged so I left it out anyway.

I'll deal with any kind of security screening bar a body cavity search, if it keeps us safe.

There is a saying I think is appropriate here

"if a terrorist actually gets to the airport, you've already lost"

A successful terrorist act (not just the run of the mill crazy) requires time to plan, so by the time a terrorist actually gets to the airport to preform their act, they have already accounted for all the possible security measures which an agency has dreamed up.

Chances are that the focus on grandmothers not being aware of limits on water bottles and the focus on the person with brown skin whom says a couple of quran verses in arabic completely misses the actual terrorist whom is desperately trying to look like the "everyman".

It is for this reason I have a problem with the current "security beliefs", it completely misses the point of what real security is about and hands authority over to people whom really shouldn't have authority.

There is a level of risk in everything we do and the TSA security should be focused on the actual risks that can be mitigated by their searches rather than performing security theatre.

Most of their work is otiose and only done to convince the masses they are essential rather than actually address known security issues.

Remembering the gun 'culture' in the USA, I don't think it fair to label the TSA's efforts in terms of theatre or tokenism. Screening granny and everyone else no doubt picks up many '44s and other guns and knives they routinely carry. I'd prefer those guns etc not to be in the air with me, even with no terrorist intent.

(And sure, a number or even many may still get through, but I hope you get my point.)

Im unable to find the link, an agent will tend to only detect one contraband item in a bag with more than 1. That's why the bag is rescreened after offending item is removed.

I'm not saying the world is perfect, but I always get uncomfortable when we "laymen" give strong opinions on procedures that we think are valid or not. Most things are done for a very good reason, even if that reason is not obvious to those out of the loop.

Normally I would agree, and whilst I have no specific knowledge of how to thwart threats (although my Grandfather did, and his book about his life has some very interesting reading in it) articles such as the one below hardly give me confidence that the TSA actually know what they are doing or that they are in any way effective.

TSA screeners failed tests to detect explosives, weapons - CNNPolitics.com

There are other numerous articles by people whom absolutely blast the TSA whom are not "laymen".

Someone else on AFF found this and I have been linking to it ever since.

Its relevant here if you haven't seen it.

The full episode is reallyinteresting

I both absolutely love this video, and find it a little scary that an agency tasked with protecting us in the air fails to pass it's own tests 95% of the time.

'Screening granny and everyone else no doubt picks up many '44s and other guns and knives they routinely carry'

Having two replacement knees means I go thru security knowing that I'm going to take more time than most to get thru. Was pulled aside in MXP one time, and was shoved to one side behind the screen operators, whilst waiting for my personal once over. One of them showed me a large plastic container, which contained a large array of knives, scissors, and other metal objects which could be said to be a weapon. This was at around 0700 and their shift had only started at 0600. He said they were having a quiet day so far! One thing I do know about airport security - no two airports around the world have the same procedures.

I've always found this quite inconsistant because I don't think there is a clear policy on this.

I've taken out my tablet for screening and they have told me that tablets can stay inside carry on. Other times I've left it in for screening and they tell me I have to take it out.
