The Department of Homeland Security plans to ban laptops in the cabins of all flights from Europe to the United States, European security officials told The Daily Beast. The announcement is expected Thursday.

Initially a ban on laptops and tablets was applied only to U.S.-bound flights from 10 airports in North Africa and the Middle East. The ban was based on U.S. fears that terrorists have found a way to convert laptops into bombs capable of bringing down an airplane. It is unclear if the European ban will also apply to tablets.

U.S. to Ban Laptops in All Cabins of Flights From Europe, Officials Say

The Trump administration is likely to expand a ban on laptops on commercial aircraft to include some European countries, but is reviewing how to ensure lithium batteries stored in luggage holds do not explode in midair, officials briefed on the matter said on Wednesday.

Selfishly hoping this does not extend to HK originating flights before the end of June. Its starting to feel like travel is just a bit too hard.....

I don't really understand the rationale behind this laptop ban. Is security in European airports not good enough to detect bomb chemicals? Are X-rays, swabs and turning devices on to prove they work not enough?

We are also flying Cx Hkg- Ewr in late June....so watching closely with fingers crossed!

A ban on laptops in the cabin is a good idea. It allows pax to relax and enjoy the flight, rather than feel guilty that they should be productive doing work-related tasks.

Each to their own I suppose. I find most airlines I'm stuck most with at the moment (Etihad) have rubbish IFE so I prefer smashing out some work!

Not sure if related but I went through security in BOS this afternoon, they were calling for all electronic devices larger than a cell phone to be taken out of bags. I called their bluff and left my iPad and kindle in my backpack; got my bag taken aside for a seperate screening as a result. TSA agent said it was a new procedure.

How about we just let people be adults and make decisions for themselves?

Although this is called a 'laptop ban', it actually bans anything larger than a phone. That rules out bringing your iPad onboard to watch videos instead of the ****ty IFE in the seatback. Being stuck on a long haul flight with no means to entertain myself would make me strongly reconsider my travel plans to these destinations.

I'm very close to scratching the USA off my personal travel list for a few years. I'm glad my next trip has been booked HKG-YVR (traveling to Seattle)

Yeah exactly
In September hubby and I are on QF7 SYD to DFW 16+ hours in Y :shock::shock: (with a flight from Perth to start and onwards to Orlando to finish, just to make it that much more unbearable) and I seriously hope to be able to take along our iPads for additional distraction strategies!!
