Hi All,

I am currently in Germany as I moved here a year ago. I am wanting to return to Australia to ride out the Coronavirus at home.

I am trying to do a classic reward booking for early April, but when I get to the confirmation screen it's failing with various errors such as "An error has occurred in our central database. Please contact us for further information. (4002 [7597])"

I am trying to go TXL > DXB > MEL or TXL > DOH > MEL in J, there's availability showing.

The only one that successfully works to the payment screen is TXL > LHR > SIN > MEL but I can't take this route as I'm unable to transit in Singapore.

I've been on hold for more than 30 minutes with Qantas call centre, any suggestions on other routes or another way to get home? I am trying to make the least amount of stops in case further border closures happen.

Thanks!

April?

Buy a ticket and get home now or stay. April is a pipe dream. Rewards are wishful thinking.

A week ago the Chief Medical Officer said there’s “No case for further travel restrictions” and now we’re here. The government’s response is now totally unpredictable. If you want back in you need to do it now.

Yes. I would just buy a cash ticket, and buy it now. Otherwise, you will probably not be riding it out in Oz.

Yeah, a couple of days ago the Foreign Minister said there were no plans for travel bans. Then two hours later, the PM announced a ban on anyone not a citizen or resident (or immediate family)..

If you are an Australian citizen, you do not have to worry about Australian border closures.

Closures at transit locations are, however, a possibility.

The problem is that most airlines are stopping all flights within the coming days. Buy the first ticket home that you can get. Do not wait until April. There will be no airlines flying by then.

I think the federal government is now on Plan 9.

The thinking behind much of the planning and announcements is about as sophisticated as the Ed Wood movie:

@drross Emirates doesn't fly from TXL to DXB, so not sure what routing you're referring to there. Have you tried searching for HAM-DXB-MEL? I assume you would be able to get to Hamburg without too much difficulty, and Emirates flies from there.

I totally understand this, but being in a very similar position (living in Austria and thinking about returning home) I cannot just leave tomorrow for an indefinite amount of time. I have an apartment, various contracts I will have to cancel, a whole bunch of stuff I'll have to find a place for, an office I'll have to give up, etc. etc. Currently I hope to be ready to travel home by the end of next week - hopefully there are still flights available then.

@dpeter I think you have rocks in your head if you think you think you are going to get a classic reward booking back to AU. If you want to get back you may have to use cash.

I plan to use a Classic Reward to get home, and I don't think I have rocks in my head. There is actually quite decent availability at the moment. However, I won't be booking more than about a day in advance as I realise the risk of cancellations is currently high.

I genuinely wish you well and hope it works out.

A week is a very long time in the world we live in.

Two weeks ago I was hiking in Borneo and if I had any idea how quickly and completely without notice the Governments around the world would lock it up, I wouldn't have gone. The stable, slow to progress but reliable societies we live in, have gone.

Did you get through and have your trip issues been resolved?

Looks like Emirates is going to stop flying to Germany (and Austria/France) from tomorrow. Which could explain the lack of award seats in April.

My current plan is to fly home via Dublin as there are now very few options to leave Austria. Let's see if that works.

I'm waiting for Qantas to assign me a new flight from London on 30 March. It will be interesting to see what they come up with, given that there are now so few flights leaving Europe bound for Australia.

I wouldn’t be waiting on Qantas or anyone else at this time. If ever there was a time to be proactive it is now.

I've already called them. The call centre had no idea what was going on with flights prior to the end of March. They said no decisions will be made until Monday. I'll be calling back then.

I assume they would re-book you on Emirates?

I thought I read somewhere today that EK are closing shop and from one of your earlier posts who is flying out of Island back to AU. Asking on behalf of a friend.

Emirates is cancelling a lot of flights, but they are still flying to LHR, SYD and PER for now. (The reason I'm looking at departing from Ireland is because I can't get from Austria to London.)

Is anyone else having problems booking award flights on qantas.com? I am trying to book for early next year (in expectation that maybe we'll be allowed out), but for the last two days I have been getting an error after the pax screen. I have checked EF and the availability is definitely there. I've tried a few browsers and computers and no luck. Ordinarily I'd call QF, but don't want to bother them given everything that is going on currently.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.
