Hi all

I recently read an online article that suggested that, notwithstanding you might be flying Economy, you could pay extra when checking in and get your meal upgraded to a business class meal.

Is this possible with Qantas International & Domestic? How much does it cost and can you redeem points for the meal upgrade? Is it possible with Virgin?

cheers Peter

Never heard of such a thing. Not true.

The only thing is, you can select your meal prior to the flight on some international services.

News to me too. Check-in is rather late for meal changes anyway, as I'm assuming food is already allocated and in its assigned trolley/locker well before this time.

Certainly not available on Qantas or Virgin best I know, and as the article itself says requires 24 hours notice on the other carriers (so not a check-in thing).

No, these are not alternative facts. Here's the article for reference purposes. No Cookies | Escape

In reference to Qantas (as it's in the QFF section - didn't realise it was about other airlines), this doesn't happen. Those other airlines referenced in that article, are now basically LCC's for EU flights anyway. Nearly everything is buy on board.

This is Jetstar Asia (3K) food options: https://www.jetstar.com/_/media/files/foods-and-drinks/3k-cafe-menus.pdf?la=en-au

I stand corrected regarding the check-in comment. Apologies. Maybe Virgin have the meal upgrade option?

I doubt it. A search of their website will confirm - I'm sure it would be quite prominent if an option.

Virgin would sell their grandmother to make a buck. Food is not their strong point so if there was an option they would be promoting it.

BA does this (as the article says). Recently did it on LHR-ORD for around $25. Was great food with real cutlery etc. I recommend it!

Airberlin does this as well on long-haul flights. You can upgrade the meal for (I think) around 25 Euros. The improved meals (one option is a very large schnitzel) actually look really good!

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Domestically on QF in Y, just pre-order the kosher meal. It's usually better than the box. It's at least a three course meal and the piece of cake is delicious!

I've never thought to do this. What kind of food do you get? Any photos?

Sorry, no photos. On coast to coast or PER - ADL sectors. Meals are usually a salad of some type. Main will chicken, sometimes beef and occasionally fish. The thing with the meat is its an actually piece of meat, no some chopped up offal like in the box meals. Then with that there will be some roast/steamed veges. Dessert is usually some stewed fruit in a container and a piece of moist cake.

Presentation is poor. It comes a big plastic type container (bento box compartment style) that is sealed. The crew will usually come talk to you prior to push back asking if its ok for them to break the seal or if you wish to inspect it first (ie to ensure it really is kosher).

I tend to not order kosher for a breakfast service as I like the regular cooked breakfast. I've also never tried kosher on QF international and would never bother with kosher for J.

A couple of times the kosher has been ordinary, but never worse, IMHO, than the Neil Perry cardboard box. Worth trying once to find out.

This kind of reminds me of Orange is the new Black where all the inmates suddenly become Jewish as they realise the kosher food is better than the regular prison slop :)

Very good. In light of the above I have amended my dietary requirements for my MEL-NOU flights next year to 'Kosher meal' and then 'Halal meal' on the return leg.

Can you post pictures of the meals. Will be interesting to see.

Lol. There is a little mosque on the side of the road 150 km north of La Tontouta airport if you need a full conversion before the return! :D
