Wanting to know if you can still upgrade certain legs of a trip that use two different airlines.

Flying MEL-LAX-LHR-HKG-MEL

Going to fly VA and VS.

If I book Freedom fares, can I still upgrade the VA legs to Business?

First time looking at using points to upgrade, as I have wanted to fly Business on VA Long Haul for awhile.

I don't have an answer for you. But also looking to do similarly and would like to know the answer.

As an extension to the question would also ask is it possible to upgrade from a VA freedom fare to business (upper class) on the VS segment using velocity points?

Yes- youre WP with VA and book a freedom fare, you can use your points to upgrade to Y+ or J, only on VA metal.

On VS, you cant use VA points to upgrade, But you can pay to upgrade, either on the ap or at checkin desk.

Nope.

Apparently it’s in the works though and eventually there will be reciprocal upgrades.

What do you the no do you think my chances are this will be available by August?? Eeek

Might just have to upgrade SYD to HKG and stay in Y for the HKG to LHR segment.

PS sorry to hijack your thread Elly

Newbie here, but what does WP mean? Seen it on a few posts.

I think the MEL LAX & HKG MEL legs will be enough for business ;) I have plenty of points to be able to do the upgrades

You must be a platinum or gold member to upgrade with points

WP = platinum, SG= Gold

I've just come into my third year of Platinum :)

Trip will be Dec 2020 - Jan 2021.

I thought it was something to do with Status, but can't figure out what the W or S mean. Just trying to later on not looking like an idiot when posting ;)

The S is for Scum and the W for W@nker (yes, seriously!)

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Hahahahahahaha love it..... must mean I'm a w@nker then ;) So what do Silver and Red get called?
PS (petty silver) and NB (nothing bronze)

Edit: sorry it's actually pleb silver. I found the listings of many acronyms used;

As for me, yes I am a WP too. Some would put a lot of emphasis on the W.

No (stutus) red is the base level of tiers for VA flyers/VFF members (NR).
Then its Plebian Silver, not hard when you do fly say several times a year, and buy all your groceries from Coles and ensuring you have FB and VFF linked, (PS).
Wanker Platinum (WP).
With VFF, its easy to climb/attain/retain status if you make an effort to fly VA 4 sectors (for VFF PS), and buy all your "things/food and other needs" from Coles, (exclude Coles Express, and Coles ebay, status wise), but includes Coles home delivery.
Woolworths and QFF have a bit better, points wise, but not status wise...
Sorry for the waffly.

Pretty much only ever shop at Coles these days, except when I'm racing to work as Safeway is closer to the shop entry. Managed 16 Status Credits last month due to the double status :D

I get all my mums points and credits pooled to my account, so she enjoys the Platinum benefits when travelling with me.

So far within the next year flight wise, I have

MEL-SYD-DRW-MEL
MEL-SYD-MEL
MEL-LAX-LHR-HKG-SYD-MEL - VA and VS

Are those domestic flights, Getaway or Elevate?
I find for my flights, Getaway always says Soldout, but Elevate is available, and usually, not too badly priced, so I go with Elevate, a bit more SC.
I have retained VFF PS for the next year, it takes about 10 days after the last day of your past status, your account will show Under Review for a few days.
For what I can see, you would have VFF SG if those domestic sectors were Elevate, after the US & UK trips.
Re: Coles FB and VFF SC earnability, plus family pooling, a very good thing going, that one.
Now if they raised the earn of points, from 0.435 to half, ie, 2000 FB points to 1000 VFF points, now, that would be great.

Looking at BNE-LAX later this year and the discount economy fares are $500-$700 but the Freedom fares seem to be in the $1300-$1500 range. That's one way, so 2 economy freedom return fares will set you back almost $5000.
Then you need to fork out a stack of FFpoints, if you can upgrade to J

Not a cheap exercise

Another option is to buy PE Saver fares which can also be upgraded to J and they seem to be roughly around the same price as Freedom and is a good "plan b" option if you fail to get your upgrades and are definitely intending on flying.

Except if you live in Tasmania - there are far fewer Coles stores here than Woolworths, so it's a much longer trip for us to the nearest Coles store - 25 minutes' drive over hill and dale to the nearest one which is a small, coughpy store, and about a 2 hour round-trip to the nearest one that's of any decent size, but it's still much smaller than, and nowhere near the product range of, any of the multitude of Woolworths stores within striking distance. I hardly shop at Coles at all now since we moved here.

When we lived in WA, we had both Coles and Woolworths in our local shopping centre and the Coles store (unlike here) was bigger, brighter and quite pleasant to shop at, whereas the Woolworths store was smaller, rather dingy and desperately needed an update.

SCs from any flying I do are pushed to Mr J so at least one of us can maintain Gold at the moment, I'm currently Silver and will drop to Red in March 😭
