Hi,
I have a booking with SQ MEL-SIN-ICN-SIN-MEL. All SQ flight numbers. I am a VA Plat, and have plenty of points.
Is it possible to transfer X number of points required for an upgrade to Business, and upgrade, while still banking the original points to VA ?
Or is it the case of associating the Krisflyer with the booking once upgraded, and having all points subsequently credit to Krisflyer ?

Cheers,
L

I don't think you would be able to upgrade using KrisFlyer miles and still credit the flights to Velocity.

In any case, what class was the original booking made in? You'll only be able to upgrade on SQ if you've booked in one of the highest flexible economy or premium economy classes, and upgrades are only single-class (i.e. you can't upgrade from Y to J if there is premium economy on the aircraft).

As far as I'm aware Y, B and E classes are eligible for mileage upgrades with SQ. So you should be able to upgrade to the next available cabin class on the return flights, provided there is award availability in the upgrade cabin.

Ok. Will try that. What is the process to upgrade?
I have an KrisFlyer account, with 0 miles and no status.
I will need to transfer the necessary points from VA, but only want to do that if there are seats available. Is this something I can search for online, or do I have to call SQ ?
Are upgrades guaranteed similar to VA, or do you only find out a day or two before the flights?

Upgrades are confirmed in advance and are subject to there being award availability.

Start by checking which cabins are available on the aircraft. If there's Premium economy, you'll only be able to upgrade to that. If there's no PE, you can upgrade to Business.

Then check for award availability in the upgrade cabin. You can do this by searching for award flights on the Singapore Airlines home page - you just need to be logged into your KrisFlyer account.

If an award seat is available, check this chart for the applicable upgrade cost. You get a 15% discount for redeeming the upgrade online, so you actually only need 85% of the miles shown on that chart.

Finally, transfer the necessary Velocity points to KrisFlyer and request the upgrade through the Singapore Airlines website.

I should also mention that the aircraft operating the flight is listed as a 777-300 (SQ-237).
What kind of Business cabin do these planes have ? Is it direct isle access for everyone, and lie flat beds ? Seatguru has a few versions of this plane. I checked on the SQ website, and it is not showing any Premium Economy available on this flight.
When I went to Manage Booking, the Upgrade with Miles button is greyed out, and there is a message as follows:

"Before checking in online, you can change your seat by entering your booking reference or e-ticket number and last name under 'Manage booking'. After checking in online, you can change your seat by doing the same under 'Check in'.

As your booking was made with a travel agent or another third-party, other changes to your booking cannot be made online and some information may not be displayed or may appear differently.

For assistance, get in touch with the source of your booking."

Its also not linked to my Krisflyer account, hence no miles being available, so could that be a reason? Or is it that is is blocked from upgrading because it was booked via a company travel agent?

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Looks to me like your issue is due to the flights being booked through a travel agent. I'd give Singapore Airlines a ring to find out why you can't upgrade online - it may be the case that you have to do it over the phone, which would unfortunately mean you forfeit the 15% online discount.

As far as I can tell, there's no Premium Economy on SQ237 and Business would be a 1-2-1 configuration.
