I plan on flying BNE/MEL or MCY/MEL late November/December and taking advantage of the good fares at the moment. If I buy the cheapest Red deal seat can I upgrade these?

I have not done this before and am a bit vague on how to do it and how many points it will cost.

I'd be very grateful if someone can help me out.

Thanks guys.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Yes, you can upgrade domestic Red-e-deal fares to business class. The cost is double the number of points as an upgrade from a Flex fare.

You would just need to request the upgrade through Manage My Booking. If a business class classic reward seat is available on your flight, the upgrade will be confirmed and the points deducted immediately. Otherwise, you'll be placed on a waitlist.

You can only upgrade Qantas flights, and only one sector at a time. For BNE-MEL, the price from a Red-e-deal would be 15,000 points. But for MCY-MEL, you would have to fly via SYD if using Qantas. That would mean that it would cost 20,000 points to upgrade both sectors (10,000 points per flight for these routes). You could alternatively choose just to upgrade one sector and not the other.

See this page on the QF website: https://www.qantas.com/fflyer/dyn/f...ntas-jetstar#domestic-classic-upgrade-rewards

I find I can get very good return on points on PER-East Coast upgrades via this method.

As Mattg pointed out, just be careful to book a flight with U class (business classic reward) availability, and you'll be able to upgrade once your flight is ticketed.

Note: wait until your flight is ticketed to request the upgrade. Multiple times, I've forced my way in to manage my booking and requested the upgrade before the flight itself ticketed. That put me on a waitlist, and I had to call to get it resolved.

Thanks Mattg for your very helpful info and Qantas link. And to exceladdict for adding to it. Much appreciated.

I now know how to go about upgrading my flights with points.

And QF will also have (as VA do) bid upgrade where you offer a certain amount of more $ to go up front.
First time I got QF SG, I got an op up. Rare but that's something that can happen.
