Booking some upcoming stays in Calgary and SFO and wanting to clarify a few things before using online check in.

If you check in online and select your room, does this reduce your chances of getting an upgrade when you arrive at the property? What is the best way to approach the upgrade if one is not offered at the time of arriving at the property - simply asking?

Also, do the partner properties offer the same ability to complimentary upgrades as Hilton does (i.e. Hampton, Garden Inn etc)

Thanks in advance!

I can't comment about the specific destinations mentioned, but I have been advised by front desk staff to not accept a room with OLCI unless you're happy with the upgrade. That comment sort of flies in the face of what the OLCI states. No harm in asking at check-in.

Certainly in my experience, DoubleTree does (oh, and Conrad of course does ... usually), no idea about the others.

I've only stayed at a Garden Inn once (and that was recently). It was just for one night and I didn't receive an upgrade (even though better rooms were available). Also stayed at a Homewood Suite once and no upgrade either (however, there were actually not better rooms available anyway).

I always ask if not offered. I tend to ask what sort of room of got. Then ask something along the lines of "oh, are there no upgrades available?" if the room isn't an upgrade. Sometimes, they prods them to upgrade me. Other times it prods the to lie to me and tell me nothing is available.

My upgrade success rate is actually been the best at Conrad out of all the brands.

Thanks for the replies. No upgrade (Hampton @ Calgary Airport) but didn't really ask, lots of people around and I didn't want to hold up the line. I had preselected my room during online check in so not sure if that made a difference.
