Husband is Qantas silver, requested an upgrade from PE to J when we booked his flight 2 months ago. As it is now 8 days out and appears to still have some availability in J, what are his chances??? I see some are blocked (not just occupied). Does this means they could release them closer to date? We did put upgrade right up to the desk on our booking. Newbie so trying to get the handle on all this. Thanks

Hopefully someone will check the flight loading on Expert Flyer if you post here: http://www.australianfrequentflyer....ility-loadings-upgrade-probability-25311.html

FWIW I'd say (not knowing the actual loading) that he'd be in with a reasonably good chance as my understanding is that that flight is not often full in J.

(I was on QF64 yesterday - flight was 100% full in Y and Y+ but there were a few empty seats in J.)

The seat map has no bearing on how many seats are unsold in the J cabin as it could mean that there are no available seats in J for sale or points upgrades but some passengers already confirmed have not yet selected their seats and the block seats on the seat map will be unblocked on the day by airport staff and allocated to pax when they check in.

Basically to get your upgrade confirmed the number or J class seats available must exceed the number of people ahead of you (& how ever many pax in your pnr) in the pecking order on the upgrade list.

You mentioned the trip is 8 days away from your post of 23 July which is 31 July. Results for 01 Aug are below but chances don't look as good as the day prior as I would say there's only 7 seats left in J. You may get a better idea 72 hours prior as sometimes WP pax get their upgrade requests confirmed as early as that however if the flight is quite full even WP's may not find out until closer to departure.

Thanks Oz. sorry for mix up re dates. I had put the August 1 in subject but think I was referring to 8 days out thinking it's not too far away so how many people suddenly decide to go to job within 8 days etc my newbie thinking!!! So I won't get my hopes up too high for hubby for next week.....

Anyone able to update this question, two days out and still hoping. Husband Qantas silver and booked in PE at the moment.
Thanks

Yes! I put a reply Saturday morning as I was more excited than him I think! He got uograded to 14b ? exit row upstairs!!! I think he has been spoiled for life!!!! Now just hoping for return trip job syd on 25 August. Quite a lot of j showing on seat alert so hers hoping. I believe there is better chance when it's mid week.

Imw, well done. generally speaking, your assumption about a flight departing on a Tuesday being less well patronised than say a Friday night or Saturday night departure for a returning long haul sector holds true for many routes and airlines. Of course, there are no guarantees for flight X.

For future reference, the three letter code to use for your husband's South African destination is 'JNB', and the style is normally to capitalise all letters.

My bad! That's what you get for replying quickly via phone! Combined with autocorrect!!!Thanks

My guess is that unless he plans on paying Qantas for the upgrade - he will need a much higher status than silver - to qualify for a 'free' upgrade. Good luck with this!

We applied lied for upgrades from PE to j using points. Hadn't planned on free, was very happy with 35k each way. Figured uograded were best use of points.

Don't worry, you wouldn't be the first to get the code for Johannesburg wrong. Check out this cutlery pack I got on a South African Airways flight, and in particular the airport code on the left.

Either SAA don't know their own hub airport, or they now fly to Johor Bahru, Malaysia! ;)
