And which airline would most most Austalians choose?

Which one?

There's advantages to either

UA will link into connections better
but
Aussies like supporting "Aussie" companies.

Hi all,
Can't find this on the UA website yet, but an email from "Best Flights" indicates that UA have matched V Aust on the $1199 deal to LAX only (not SFO as headline may indicate :))

Just did a dummy booking on the Oz UA site for the same dates I'm flying QF in March. Came out just over A$1200 ret for both MEL-LAX and SFO. The strange thing is that the lowest price to LAX was via SFO, & the lowest price to SFO was via LAX. Now if they weren't via SYD I might have been tempted.

UA would have to discount a hell of a lot more to get me on their metal over QF (or even V-Aus!).

They have a way to go to meet QF international standards (plus V-Aus I imagine..)

That's what I was thinking!

A budget (dare I say almost LCC-esque) airline matching the price of full-service airlines? Wow, bargain!

Are loads this low on United usually?
LAX-MEL 1/1/09- 85Pax
LAX-MEL 3/1/09- 73Pax

Just a couple bad days is it?

Happy Fare War!

Finishes 31/12/08- Travel Mar - 16 June

Finally, discount fares come to Oz.

Actually, $1200 isn't reallly "discount" but just what an advance purchase economy fare should have been all along.

I note Qantas have mostly matched this fare as well.

With DL and V entering the fray, this will bode extremely well for the Australian travel industry. Americans are the biggest spenders when traveling, but for years have been dissuaded from Australian travel due to the monopolistic and absurdly high airfares.

In a year, I expect we'll see mostly full loads on all the carriers.

Load factors on my Transpacs this year have been pretty high (NZ)..2009 WILL be interesting in that respect... no doubt there!

NZ too seem to have matched this fare.... and I would fly with them rather than QF with the same alacrity that many here would choose to fly QF rather than UA!!

YMMV of course.. but leaving aside the excellent chance of an upgrade clearing as an NZ Gold (11 from 11 this year), and likewise leaving out the near certainty of being in an exit aisle if the UG doesn't happen...(selected online at time of booking finally).. I just find Y on NZ to be more comfortable than on QF....

Comfort is SUCH a subjective thing of course!

Hmmm....decisions, decisions... AS I have some time off in May.... NZ is showing $1147 ai SYD-AKL-LAX vv that week... Tempting indeed.... Already have US trips booked for June (via Pacific islands) .. and July (direct).... How about a hatrick?;)

I can see myself being talked into this... I'm pretty persuasive.....

Well I guess you're not Mileage Plus 2P, 1P or 1K. So you would get the horrible Y seats.

But if you were 1P or 1K, you would get an Economy Plus seat with more legroom (for free) and get also 200% miles towards a future Star Alliance flight.

I don't think VA can do that...

I don't know a Y from a 1K and just can't see the benefits of Qantas cattle class for moi. It was just tooo cramped for me. They put bubs and mum next to a stranger despite a 'family' seat reservation. 2 hours was spent on the tarmac in Sydney to rejig luggage, and there was an incident where we were diverted to land after takeoff from Brisbane to, coincidentally, an airport with fewer houses near it. Then there's been price fixing at least for freight, and the decision to just dump trips on Jetstar to Nagano, and Junkstar's customer service is carp. Stuff Qantas. I've got enough for one ff flight return to the US. Maybe one day, when airfares become extortionate again, I'll use up the qff points. Meantime, deals ike UA's are enticing because Qantas-Jetstar just aren't the company I grew up with.

For me, who struggles to sleep when practically upright, good IFE is certainly the thing that gets me across the line on a long Y flight. Last time I looked (someone correct me if a I am wrong) UA only have mainscreen entertainment in Y whereas QF, VA & NZ all have personal screens with AVOD.

In business class, if it is a flight with new J on UA, I would take it over QF on the 747 without question; the new fully flat seats are v good. My recent experiences of UA had excellent service from UA check in staff through to flight attendants and the seating was v good. for those wanting IFE, decent sized screen with a good selection of AVOD

Laptop power was AC , so no empower needed unlike old J

Of course, the new J on UA is moot for this sale as not even a 1K can confirm such a seat using these fares.

I have booked a QF one for march and have nicely preallocated an exit row and an extra legroom seat for my A388 flights. Of course that's with WP status, just like 1K's getting E+ seating. (& I'll get 200% miles - although that not as good value as 200% miles on UA in relation to award flight redemptions)

Well, I usually fly to the US via SIN, and UA operates 777's with AVOD on the SIN-NRT-LAX/SFO/SEA route. Of course, I never fly Y on that route, but there are PTV's in Y I'm assured. Might cost a bit more, but it's well worth it IMHO (and you can get stopovers in SIN/NRT/HNL if you wish).

Yes, NZ is my preferred choice too for trans-pacific trips and you've nearly talked me into it also. Am planning another trip to Ottawa and can go BNE-AKL-SFO-EWR-YOW (all in Y) return for $1550 (including taxes) flying NZ & CO.

Will make a nice change to last year's epic YOW-YVR-LAX-TPE-SYD-BNE 40 hour trip home with AC & CI!

Sad really... I'm looking at SYD-AKL-LAX on a Friday then departing LAX on the Sunday.. just visit some friends in CA for the weekend!...

I haven't found these good fares to SFO..?? Not that it matters as I want a 744 operated flight... (SFO is still all 777 right?) Will select exit row if still available and only put in for upgrades to Y+..... don't want to blow my entire remaining Airbucks balance on a relatively "silly" trip...

(Used Airbucks and Gold certs to request Uprades to BP on other flights this year.. and also requested Y+ upgrades for two friends who fly out a week before me... I REALLY hope they get them! Be a nice treat for some good folks! Unfortunately even though it's a Monday flight out of AKL I suspect TWO is too much to ask for...:-| This Gold nominee perk is a pretty decent one IMO!)

Come to think of it, upgrades for me on a Friday/Sunday may be unlikely anyway!! Be a shame not to continue my 2008 upgrade % ..100!

You may have to depart SYD on a Wed, leaving LAX on Sunday to get the cheaper fares under $1150. Whilst most SFO flights are 777's, NZ still do operate some 747-400 flights to & from SFO, eg, NZ0007 Thurs March 26th SFO-AKL is scheduled to use a 747.

Excellent.. I might check some dates for SFO then....

I would have thought the same about the 4(?) day minimum.. but it prices out right with those days...and most (but not all) variations..

Dunno why... Keying off the AKL arrival on the way back? Only thought I've had about it....
