In todays Age was an article about United replacing 747s with 777 aircrafts:
United to replace 747s on Australia-US route

The author covers how this might increase prices due to decrease capacity but I would have thought the 777s might have better onboard services. While I haven't been on the United flight for a long time i think they still have cabin entertainment for TV/Movies instead of AVOD in the seats or handing out iPads etc.

What does everyone else think?

From my limited experience, plus the tales of others, UA need to replace some of the more grumpy & disengaged Flight Attendants who come as part of the package too!

Absolutely. Bit of a recent experience here. Yes, 'coach' had to make do with cabin screens rather than individual AVOD.

But good to see UA replacing the old girls (I mean the planes). I've done Air Canada's TPAC in 777s quite a few times and its a good flight.

I wonder if UA will have F on their 777s? (I would doubt it.)

Um, Matt thinks they will in the article:

The jumbos seat a total of 374 passengers whereas United’s Boeing 777s accommodate 269 in three cabins – first, business and economy classes

Arrgh .. thanks... missed that bit.

Personal IFE in Y will also bring UA up to 1995-spec.:p

I'm surprised their 772s have the legs for SYD-LAX fully loaded vs headwind?

And SYD-MEL will be out of the question without a stop somewhere along the way i thought?

Edit: despite what it says on the UA website (only named as -200s) I assume they must be 200ERs or they'll get nowhere near SYD.

The United 744 fleet is notoriously unreliable - this change will at least bring an improvement in reliability hopefully.
