So I am nearing the expiry date of my gold membership with velocity. To combat this I booked flights for my husband and I to Honolulu from Brisbane. When I called to add my velocity membership number, I was advised that I was on O class which isn't eligible.

I have made several calls to Hawaiian and Velocity and neither will help me. Hawaiian literally put in writing that the fare class was 'system generated' so when you book, it's purely chance as to whether or not you get on an eligible fare class. I have massive issues with this.

Has anyone been able to over come this?

If you have booked an ineligible fare class, apart from paying to upgrade to a higher fare class there isn’t much else that you can do.

they said they can only guarantee if I go business.. The issue is that when you select the fare type, you cannot then select a fare class.. it's impossible.. how is this a partnership?

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

It’s not unusual to have partner fare buckets not earn.

You need to check the earn table, and get the airline to quote how much a change will be to fare bucket such and such from your current booking

ok I understand... Hawaiian don't seem to think that they can do anything, is there anyone specific there you would suggest speaking to. I've put so many complaints in and none of them has suggested this as a solution?/

How flexible is your current ticket?

You have to get a quote from whoever you booked through, to the next fare class that falls into the above groups - note that not all are on sale or available at a given time.

You then have to weigh up whether that extra cost is worth getting the points.

A couple of years back I also booked a very expensive economy ticket on Hawaiian that was also didn't earn Virgin points. (Though months out, it was just a peak period.) I was annoyed but just had to suck it up; I wasn't going to pay a ridiculous amount more just for points earning. Note the fare class isn't random; it's associated with the price you paid.

Im in the same boat and Im in Comfort as well so expected that I would get points too. I flew Honolulu to SF in November, booked Comfort and got points even though they said I couldnt. They just appeared randomly a few days later. The reason they said I couldnt was because Id already been allocated Hawaiian Miles so they couldnt do anything about it. But then I got both.

Can anyone tell me where the hawaiian airlines website shows the fare class? I can't see it.

I couldnt see it until I had booked and received my e-ticket. But apparently you can do a dummy booking go past seat selection and on the next page scroll down to terms and conditions. It says mileage is not earned on other airline frequent flyer flyer programmes when booked in L, H, K and O classed. Well this is incorrect. I just looked at my Nov trip Honolulu to San Francisco. I claimed missing points with Velocity my ticket said K class and although initially Virgin said I couldnt get them because Hawaiian Airlines had already awarded me their miles, they did in fact turn up in my Velocity account and my Hawaiian miles are still sitting there too. So when I get back from Hawaii in May I will be claiming missing points with velocity and will argue that if they gave me points for a K flight then I want it for an O flight.

Just before you finish the purchase there's a link that allows you to look at fare conditions or something - this is where it will show you the class. Its well hidden though.

I just tried that it doesnt show the fare class it only tells you which classes are not eligible for Velocity and other flyer points. It doesnt seem to tell you until you receive your e-ticket

Tried this today. It doesn't show you. I messaged Hawaiian Airlines on Facebook, they said the same thing, go to fare conditions and it will be on the top left hand corner. Well it isn't. So I went back to them and they said to contact their Web Support Team on 1-866 586 9419, then I said I wanted an Australian number they directed me to ring the Reservations team on 1-300-661-339. I asked them if there is a difference in Classes between getting a refundable flights as opposed to getting a non-refundable flight, and they couldn't answer that.

Yup just had a look myself. The actual fare class is not listed in the fare rules at the end of the booking process.

This seems very dodgy of Hawaiian Airlines...

I also didn't receive an e-ticket or receipt when I booked my last flight a few weeks ago. I sent them an email asking for receipt for the full amount, I booked an Extra Comfort seat, to which they responded

Unfortunately, the upgrade fee is the “additional cost” to sit in those seats and is not combined with the cost of the initial flight ticket

And then, they proceeded to email me a receipt for the full amount I paid pretty much after sending me the first email saying they don't do that. Weirdos!

I also asked someone else whether the class would be different if I booked a refundable vs non-refundable seat on the same flight, and I got a "possibly" I said to her but if I try to book a refundable trip Comfort Class is not coming up as an option, she said you book then upgrade, which makes no sense at all!

I had the same issue a few years ago, had booked comfort plus on both sectors but only earnt point for the outbound sector.

Recently 12 months ago when I booked again I booked through Amex travel and gave them the elegable fare types. When I received my tickets they all fell into the eligible category and the pricing was about the same (or even slightly cheaper) then the HA website.

I would suggest trying to use an agent if you can?

I tried to use the 'chat now' function as I was booking my tickets with Hawaiian Airlines, but even then they did not provide certainty on the fare class. It would be great if someone can take a screenshot and show the link to click to see the fare class to help others in future, I couldn't find it. Obviously you would have to black out sensitive information.

The other thing is (and I think it was mentioned earlier) that you actually have to contact Hawaiian Airlines after you have purchased your tickets to provide your Velocity Membership. I used the chat now function and that was quite effective, though obviously not as effective as allowing us to provide our number upfront.

Does anyone know if you book Virgin, Brisbane to Honolulu (via Sydney) if tgis gets points. I dont think its fair that we have to fly via Sydney on a Hawaiian flight but cant get points if we fly direct with Hawaiian from Brisbane
