Typo on On-Line-Booking

Ref: LAN Airlines
A Friend made an on line booking for a group traveling with LAN from Santiago to Mendoza ( 1 hour flight)
Unfortunately he made a mistake with my Wife's Surname
He used MY Surname book my Wife.
She uses her Maiden name on her Passport etc.

Bottom Line:
Long Time on the Phone to LAN
The original booking was made from Canada by my friend
I was trying to change the Surname on the ticket from Australia
Although I was on an extremely poor Computer link "phone line" the LAN representatives I spoke to were willing to address my problem.
Was elevated to Management Level to try and solve the problem.
There was NO WAY that their System protocols would allow me to correct my Wife's surname
I had other LAN tickets with LAN flights that showed her correct surname; they accessed these and confirmed
They could change the surname if my wife had divorced, changed her name, gender etc that would have provided a documented paper trail.
Unfortunately on the "No refund/ no change" ticket my friend had booked from Canada and made the surname typo did not fall into any of LAN protocols to allow a Surname correction.
Typos are not allowed nor are they catered for when other documented evidence to prove the error is presented.

My fault / or in reality my friends fault:
LAN and myself both agreed that the easiest solution was to book another seat in my wife name with the correct Surname and rip up the booking with the incorrect surname (typo)

I give the LAN representative credit for trying to solve what was to me a simple problem (correct the surname on the ticket)
To them there was a set of protocol barriers in their booking systems that prevented changes of surname because it was a typo; not a name change because of marriage, deed poll, gender reallocation etc.
I booked a new ticket and learnt a lesson
Check the correct spelling, ticket clauses, refund/ changes allowed(?)
Make sure your friends know your wife uses her maiden Name.
